Highlights Around Koura Port
1. The 33 Kannon Statues of Koura
A short 5-minute walk from Koura Port along the Hiyoriyama walking trail takes you to a sacred site nestled into cliffside hollows formed by eroded underwater volcanic deposits. Here, you’ll find 33 stone statues of Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy), set within ancient rock layers shaped by volcanic activity. It’s a deeply spiritual and visually striking place where nature and faith intertwine.
2. “Snake Descent” Rock Formation at Ryuzaki
Known locally as Jakudari, this dramatic rock formation resembles a giant serpent slithering down a cliff. It’s actually a volcanic dike, where magma once surged up through cracks in the earth’s crust. The best way to experience this natural marvel is by approaching it from the sea via sea kayak.
3. Koura Hiyoriyama Hiking Trail
This scenic loop trail starts at Koura Beach and climbs Mt. Hiyoriyama, passing through the village of Ochii before returning to the coast. Along the way, you’ll encounter the 33 Kannon statues, the Snake Descent rock formation, and panoramic views of the crystal-clear ocean. The full course takes around 2–3 hours to complete and is perfect for nature lovers.
4. Koura Beach
Koura Beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and peaceful atmosphere. During the summer months, it’s a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling, especially for families seeking a quieter beach experience.
