The host made our check in easy, the house was lovely, everything you would need, clean and quiet. Offstreet parking was a bonus, and his recommendation for a meal was perfect 10/10

The building is right off the Main Street and maybe a 10/15 minute walk from the station. The free shuttle is conveniently just a few minutes away. The apartment was very clean and spacious. The staff were very easy to communicate with and had great recommendations for local eateries and onsens. Thank you Aura Yuzawa for the pleasant stay!

From the moment we arrived, the hosts went above and beyond. After a long flight from New Zealand, we weren’t fully organised, but they helped us with everything, even offering us dinner and arranging a car a few days later so we could get around easily. They didn’t just host us; they genuinely became friends. The place itself is very traditional, full of authentic Japanese character, and the location is perfect, right next to the chairlift up to Suginohara. Service-wise, they were always checking in and making sure we were well looked after. 10/10 experience.

We have stayed at many onsens around Japan over the years but this place is the very best of any we have stayed! It is a historic building that has 200 + years of history. Even the Japanese emperor stayed here a long time ago. On arrival the building looks a bit old but you quickly learn that it is nothing to be concerned about. Staff members, both old and young are exceptional and carry on the traditions of Japanese hospitality. The food, both breakfast and dinner was exceptional. Great variety of traditional Japanese cuisines. Every meal different items (except rice of course :>) . The natural spring hot tub just outside the room was very spacious. Temperature is adjustable by yourself. Truly a great place to spend 3 nights or more. Neighborhood walking also pleasant.

Our objectives for the trip were (1) to learn more about Japan beyond Tokyo's business districts and (2) to do some skiing. Objective #2 was met: we had four very good days of skiing, in various conditions. As for objective #1, Komatsuya helped exceed our expectations: David (the owner) kindly drove us around wherever we needed to go, Izumi-san cooked wonderful Japanese food for breakfast and dinner, and Yukiko-san introduced us to the local attractions and helped us with the schedule and reservations. The room was clean and spacious and the onsen was an outstanding way to wrap up our skiing days. But beyond all this, we felt like we gained a new family in Japan. We will remember our stay at Komatsuya very fondly because of David and his team and, should we come back to ski in Japan again, I can't imagine staying anyplace else.
