Located in a 100 year-old Registered Tangible Cultural Property, Ryokan Hostel K's House is located in Shizuoka, a 7-minute walk from JR Ito Train Station. The hostel was located in a Showa era ryokan building, right next to the Tokaikan and only 300 mts. from the beach. It's like immersing yourself in a Miyazaki movie, but with today's plumbing. The place is exquisitely preserved, with a large lounge area and free access to the banquet halls to relax. There are small Showa era decorations all around, so it is fun to go looking around. It also has a complete kitchen. The public onsen in the basement is really nice, altough a bit small, but I was alone everytime I went there, so I had a huge bath to myself, comparatively. If you are reluctant to share a bath, there are also two small private onsen that you can use. The staff was really friendly and they recommended a lot of nice local restaurants for dinner.

Located in Nakatsugawa, さかのみち-sakanomichi features a shared lounge, restaurant, bar, and free WiFi throughout the property. The Sakanomichi is a gem. My daughter and I stayed here for 3 nights in February. Ken san and Yuki san were delightful. The property was very clean and comfortable. They renovated the inn themselves and you can see care and attention in every detail from materials used to decor. The food was delicious and much of it was grown (rice) or made (plum wine) by Ken or Yuki. They provided great recommendations for restaurants and side trips. They ensured we were prepared with all the details required to ensure we had successful adventures. We are so lucky to have we picked the Sakonomichi. It was sugoi!!!

Set in Ito, 30 km from Shuzen-ji Temple, リゾートホテル伊東山荘-Toki- offers accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a terrace and a restaurant. From being picked up from the Station, until we departed this was an exceptional place to stay. An full apartment sized room, a soak in one of the two hot springs, two western-style breakfasts, our favorite hotel on a 15 hotel tour of japan. Front of house and chef were both great.

33 km from Koibito Misaki Cape in Shimoda, 横川温泉湯殿ととのゆ provides accommodation with access to a hot spring bath, hot tub and open-air bath. We will be back! WOW. This was a shot in the dark booking since I couldn’t find a place near the beach that was tattoo friendly. We were blown away at the facility, amenities and overall beauty of the location. I booked 3 rooms. Everyone had their own private onsen bath. My husband and I upgraded to the sauna barrel room and we LOVED IT. The guys all did sauna in the morning. They even give you handmade authentic sauna hats. Breakfast was simple but filling. Half of the group did the Japanese style, half did American. My jumbo toast made me feel like I was in a Ghibli movie having breakfast. There is a vending machine in the breakfast area was a variety of snacks and drinks. Our van made it on the roads to the property. So a standard vehicle will have no issue. Beautiful creak flowing in the backyard of every room. Every room has an entrance, toilet & sink room, living room (doubles as bedroom bc you have tatami beds), vanity sink & rack, THEN sliding door to your shower & bath, THEN sliding door to your porch with seating. Our room had the barrel immediately to the left of the porch with ANOTHER outdoor tub. Price was excellent!!

Located within 39 km of Koibito Misaki Cape and 43 km of Shuzen-ji Temple, 海好きな大人の隠れ家下田ハウス features rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Shimoda. The host was incredibly welcoming and made the whole experience feel like visiting old friends rather than just a place to sleep. Their local recommendations were spot-on - especially the waterfall, authentic restaurant, and onsen nearby. The bicycle they lent me was perfect for getting around. The outdoor bathing area was a highlight - you can shower and soak while looking up at the stars. There's also a creek you can climb down to (careful though), a hammock for lounging, and a steam sauna (extra charge but worth it). Evenings had ukulele music and good conversations with that comfortable vibe you get when staying with people who genuinely enjoy hosting. Your experience will differ!!

Set 1.3 km from Takayama Station and 3.5 km from Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village in the centre of Takayama, Guest House HINATA - Japanese House with Sauna and Open-air Bath offers accommodation with... Guest House Hinata was an ideal place to stay in Takayama. It gave us tons of room to move around, has an incredible sauna and shower right beside the outdoor garden, a beautiful bedroom paired with a tatami room, and lovely art pieces throughout the house. I greatly enjoyed reading through their guest book to see where other guests have travelled from. Every amenity you could think of was provided. And it’s just a couple of minutes drive from the centre of town which was great!

Set in Nagoya, less than 1 km from Oasis 21, TIAD, Autograph Collection offers accommodation with a terrace, private parking and a bar. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast had a great selection that blends Japanese and intercontinental well. Room was exceptional. Hotel had a great layout and good facilities. Definitely staying at TIAD again when visiting Nagoya.

Situated in Takayama and with Takayama Station reachable within 600 metres, THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA features concierge services, non-smoking rooms, a garden, free WiFi throughout the property and a... We love the automated toilet, private garden view and spacious room with both beds and tatami area, as well as a sofa seating area. It is like a ryokan, yet modern. The front desk staffs were so welcoming and helpful, allowing us extra time to complete our laundry.

Situated just 9.4 km from Wara History Museum, 花緑里-Hanamidori-乙原のやど 岐阜下呂温泉郡上飛騨金山湖畔リゾート provides accommodation in Gujo with access to a garden, a terrace, as well as a 24-hour front desk. They really made you feel as if you were a part of their family and took time out of their day to show me around the area and drive me to many different areas all while having really nice conversations.
