What is now Trier’s cathedral was once an overwhelming Roman building project commissioned by Rome’s first Christian emperor, Constantine. It originally included four basilicas, a baptistery and outbuildings, although none of that remains today. What does remain inside the newer structure is a gruesome relic that links back to Roman roots – the skull of Constantine’s mother, Saint Helena.
