Tainted with nazi ugliness, where Hitler accelerated his rise to power, disconcerting to observe tourists enjoying the establishment without any recognition of its shameful part in German and global historical events (interestingly there were no plaques).
Give yourself time to find a seat. They do not seat you. Walk around and see what seats are free and ask if you may sit there. Simple as that! Parking is around the corner and easy to find. The strudel was amazing!
This was the restaurant with extremely slow service where our waiter did not bring drinks until 15 min. after requested, (so we couldn't eat our food until he did). Very frustrating and expensive meal.
Great beer selection and Kaesspaetzl! Efficient service. Prices reasonable. Was disappointed that when I asked a band-member could they please play "Muss i' den", he said they'd play it for 5 Euros! I remain disgusted, and will never forget this. The band is there to entertain us; we shouldn't have to pay extra to hear a typical German folk tune!
The highlight of our visit to the original Hofbrauhas was the band and people watching. Compared to other beer gartens where we had traditional Bavarian food, the food here was AWFUL. And service was completely random. If you want to check it off of your list I recommend going for the beer, the band and the people watching but save your appetite and eat somewhere else. If you want to hear the band sit inside and wait for a good spot near them. If not (and the weather is nice) opt for the patio.
Very touristy but you need to do this once. Eating inside there is no wait and service is better because they can get to you quicker. However, we ate on the patio above the garden and it was great service. Don’t forget to go to the top floor and visit the beer hall. This place has great history!
The famous beer halls are difficult to describe - massive establishments dotted around the city. We tried the Augustiner Bräuhaus, Hofbräuhaus and Paulaner Bräuhaus. Augustiner had a massive beer garden (closed at the end of October), and a number of rooms. Great for a beer, but when we went back for food, struggled to find an unreserved table and when we did, the service was so bad we left. Hofbräuhaus was mad - huge, busy and noisy - but a great atmosphere in an interesting hall with brass band music. Found a table both times we went, and had decent food and great beer. Paulaner was, by comparison, quiet, and seemed smaller. But a lovely place to have a decent beer - and more like a British gastro-pub in its feel. If the others are too busy or noisy, I'd recommend a trip to Paulaner.
