The outstanding landmark of the city, which I first saw in 1954 as a member of D.J.H. (Deutsches Jugendherbergswerk). The building with its 500 foot spires remained splendin, and largely intact, while the surrounding area had been flattened.
If you want to go up the tower, do it early in your day; it's a long way up and you don't want to be tired before starting the climb. Also: there will be fewer people coming down the stairs and slowing you down.
fantastic building great views from top------------very hard climb in the heat dangerous --i would reccomend a one way system on very narrow stairs difficult some people coming up others trying to get down. but worth the climb if u bear with it
It's hard to climb all the 533 steps but the view is definitely worth it. Try to go there couole of minutes before they close, it's easier to walk the steps downstairs when none is walking upstairs anymore.
Beautifull cathedral, the biggest in Germany, more beautifull from outside. We were there on December 24 for a magnificent bells concert from outside. Nice from inside for an organ concert during the mass. We enyoed it.
The cathedral was in a state of repair when we visited, not surprising as it’s quite old!!. Inside however was slightly disappointing. In the last few months I have visited St Paul’s in The Vatican & the cathedral in Palma Malaga which both were stunning inside and out. Dom is poorly lit and considering it was a week before Christmas, it was not very festive.
Excellent value - perfectly located near the Cologne Cathedral and train station. Strong 2-star hotel - we were looking for clean, simple, and nothing fancy. Clean, comfortable bed in a compact room (watch your head on the dormer windows). Breakfast was a great value - don't pass it up - excellent breads, meats, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, eggs, juices, coffee/tea/hot cocoa. The front desk day staff were superb and very friendly & helpful. I'd stay here again - you can't beat the price!
It is located right next to the Cologne cathedral and the centre which was very convenient to move around in the day and night. And considering the price, it is fairly nice accommodation in comparison to the other hotels in the city. But, don't expect an ordinary hotel in the other cities in other countries, it seemed a little bit old and the service may not satisfy those who expect a hotel.
stayed here one night with purpose of visiting the Cologne Cathedral. Had flown in to Frankfort and took train to Cologne. Hotel is very convenient to train station. We got there too early to check in but receptionist was able to hold our bags while we toured. Simple modern decor, spacious, comfortable and clean. Friendly and helpful staff. Nice introduction to first trip to Germany.
An ancient hotel built in 1863, with perfect location towards Cologne Cathedral, and 5 mins from the shopping district. Latterly 5 star hotel with its facilities and more, the Staff were amazing as i enjoyed my stay as i usualy love to try different hotels, and i recommend you to have same experiance.
This hotel is a few blocks from the Cologne Cathedral and one of 5 beautiful Christmas markets. The room was very comfortable and they had a terrific breakfast! Try to eat breakfast early if possible, it does get crowded. Staff was friendly and spoke fairly good English.
Hotel has great location in the very center of old part f city - just 10 minutes walking from Cologne Cathedral and station. It's wonderful view from the room on Rhine river. Staff is very polite and friendly. Recommend this hotel!
The hotel was affordable and very close to the Train Station and sites like the Old City and the Cologne Cathedral. The staff was friendly and Accommodating and the room, while a bit old and worn, was very clean.
The hotel is very close to Ludwig Museum and the Cologne Cathedral. If you're planning for a short stay (1 day), the rooms are okay.
The location is great. A stone throw away from the Cologne Cathedral. Walk from the HBF station to the Hotel, is about 3-5 minutes.
Cologne cathedral is stunning by its height, the carvings and sculptures that cover the whole building. Once inside, one is also impressed by its size and some of its windows. The reliquary of the three Magi is also kept there. It is unfortunate that the outside of such a world renowned cathedral has still not been clean and the building looms black over the town.
Visit Cologne Cathedral and the twelve superb Romanesque churches in the town as well as the Museum Ludwig, one of the finest Art Galleries we have visited. Also recommended is a trip to Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) to see Charlemagne's amazing chapel and his famous throne (an hour by train).
The Cologne Cathedral is one of the most magnificent structures you'll ever hope to see, and is in remarkable condition given its age and turbulent history.
