Seek out the small hidden café on the side of the mountain, facing Mount Igueldo.. This hidden gem serves cold beer and great coffee, and was an absolute top find. The cool surfer dudes that run the tiny stone café are really friendly and helpful.
Wonderful walk up winding pathways and stairs to be rewarded with 360 views of city and ocean. The museum at top was free and very informative as to major events and battles from the 15th century on.
I walked behind San Telmo museo & turned right in front of the church. I walked to the next street and turned left. Walk straight maybe half a kilometer & turn right where there is a stone pathway going up the hill. There is a very old sign in multiple language saying 'this way to the castle'. The walk was uphill but quickly I was at the mirador. I read intimidating reviews of the climb but really it wasn't difficult. The views from the mirador were spectacular.
Forget about the cable car. Walk up. It's not that hard and sections are via stairs. You be rewarded with amazing views over San Sebastian but also over the ocean. Despite the walk you still will have to pay 2.2 euro to get to the top. I didn't bother as it looked like a bit of a circus up there.
The hotel is perched right on the edge of the old town while facing the port and Monte Urgull, so ideally situated and quiet. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about the nearby pinxto bars and other attractions.
