Popular plaza for souvenirs or a local snack. We tried Calamari on a bun called Calamares for only 2.95 euros in a charming little tavern which advertising in the window. Just around the corner in a large Tapas hall, Calamares were 6.5 euros. I can recommend the Fruit sticks there for only 2 euros. Segway guided tours are offered across from the Tapas. Great way to see any city. If you have not done this before they are seriously easy to control & ride.
The square is full of restaurants where you can eat or have a drink. We were there on a protest day, so it was very crowded. Otherwise, I think it would be lovely in the evening to people watch and eat.
What it would look like if Versailles were in the middle of Paris -- like the Louvre, only bigger. The plaza is more like a park in front of the royal palace. The King does not reside here, but it's definitely still a palace. Pay-what-you-want walking tours from Plaza del Callao (look for purple umbrellas) will take you here and to Plaza del Sol, the two you need to know.
One of the exit streets of the Plaza Mayor (calle de botoneras), there is a tiny Cafe (La Ideal) where you can eat a bocadillo de calamares (Calamari roll) a tradition if you are to visit the plaza Mayor. You can eat one in any other establishment I just like that one. It is traditional old loud dirty small, it is great. Behind the plaza there are also some rest where you can have great potato tortilla with sangria or mushroom tortilla with sangria etc. and hear tipical spanish music (great for those kind of turists) - it is great fun.
Beautiful but be very careful - someone got pick pocketed in front of us. And my friend also felt a hand trying to unzip her purse. If you venture there - keep everything closed and do not wear large purses.
This is “yob centrak” with crowds of football type chanters singing and shouting g till after 3 in the morning. Crowded through the day but not a good place to stay near if you like to sleep at night
1) Excellent location. The hotel is right next to a busy walking street. Many restaurants and shops around. Plaza Mayor, Plaza Sol and the Royal Palace are all within walking distance. 2) Hotel condition. This hotel is newly renovated. Everything seems pretty new and clean. Water pressure is great and the towel warmer is a great surprise. 3) Friendly staff. They called the restaurant for us and ordered a taxi to the airport at the day checkout.
Hotel is located in the business area of Madrid, about 5/10 minute walk from Cuzco Metro, which is one stop from the Stadio Bernabeu, and you can be in the touristy areas in about 15 minutes (Plaza Mayor/Sol/Opera) using the metro if you want to. There are plenty of quality restaurants and bars around this area - and the local bar opposite the hotel is good for a cheap beer. On a very quiet road.
The breakfast was good with plenty of choices. There was a large sitting area in the hotel lobby. The location is great -- close to Plaza Mayor and other places. The room was lovely and clean. The bathroom was large with a nice shower. Our room had windows on two sides. One overlooked the monastery; the other overlooked Plaza San Martin.
The location is excellent, within a short walking distance of most everything... museums, park, Plaza Mayor, wonderful restaurants, night life, etc. The hotel is pleasant, rooms are well sized, clean and comfortable, bathroom is spacious, and well equipped, the staff is friendly and helpful.
The room and bed were very comfortable and the hotel was centrally located close to Plaza Mayor. The air conditioner worked extremely well and there was an elevator to the 2nd floor. There were many restaurants, bars and cafes very close.
The hotel was just across Mercado San Miguel stone's throw away from Plaza Mayor with shops, restaurants and interesting sights. The room and bathroom was just the right size for 2 persons. Shampoo and body wash were of good quality.
Apartment is sparking clean, and very comfortable. It is beautifully decorated, and it's centrally located. We were able to walk to all major attractions. Beautiful apartment in an excellent location, right by Plaza Mayor.
The entertainment at the Plaza Mayor and surrounds (individual entertainers) were incredible. Waking up to music at the Plaza - violins, guitar, accordion. Excellent. The flea market was an experience, Calle Cava Baja for the tapas bars and cocktail bars was excellent, the Grad Via for shopping, Mercado de San Miguel for sampling the extraordinary cuisine...
Certainly the variety of restaurants and tapas, the San Miguel market by the Plaza Mayor is superb.
Try St Miguel Food Market next to Plaza Mayor and enjoy super eats and a great atmosphere.
Local people street entertainers plaza mayor square and surrounding areas were good
Don't go to any of the "eat as much as you can". It was the only tourist trap we encountered. North to Plaza Mayor street you'll find very good and fancy restaurants. South to this street you will find great othentic Spanish and south American restaurants and a little bit further you'll find real othentic and very good chinese restaurants.
