Use park and ride into town, then pick up a local bus to the cathedral - its bit of climb for the less agile - the Cathedral café serves decent food and is no more expensive than other places in town most of which have los of steps. Check there is no wedding /funeral when you visit or you may have limited access.
Atmospheric, great sense of history & the many generations who have worshipped there. I attended the Sunday morning service which I very much enjoyed. Listening to their choir was quite an emotional experience.
I suspect that this is England’s oldest cathedral and it is certainly the most intact Romanesque structure I have ever seen. Gob-smackingly beautiful, it even houses the Tomb of the Venerable Bede, England’s first historian. A must see place. I will be going back to see the things I missed. Choose your time of arrival carefully since it is a working cathedral.
They had run our of guide books as new ones are being prepared. As photography was not allowed inside the Cathedral, we havent any images to help us remember our visit. As we live 12500 miles away we may not be able ti visit again
Christmas Carols at 11am (be there early! the choir wasn't loud enough to reach the back) were a pleasure that will stay with me far beyond this year's Christmas. Stunning. Oh, great food market too by the way, being the Christmas fair.
We had really bad luck while visiting - we tried two times, on two consecutive days, and both times there were some stupid occasions and the staff hindered us from entering the Cathedral. We had dreamt of this visit for a long time and travelled a long distance for this, and we had to leave with a really bad taste in the mouth. So sad!
A lovely property with a luxurious bathroom suit. Has fantastic walks surrounding it including walks to the Vale and you can continue to Durham Cathedral. A lovely quiet village pub only a few doors up which serves nice food and a good pint too. Only a couple of minutes drive from the Durham amazon. Would highly recommend.
Location was excellent--walking distance from historic center and Durham Cathedral, staff friendly and helpful, room smallish but comfortable, price very reasonable
Perfect location and a short walk to Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle. Bathroom shower is the best ever in Marriott Hotels.
Durham Cathedral is splendid because of its style of architecture, and its setting. Also, it is very old.
