Go early and make the most of the day. The keepers who do the different talks on animals are very well informed and well worth listening to. There are some really steep paths at the zoo so be prepared for the up hill struggle by wearing comfortable shoes.
Very dissapointed in the zoo, only the pandas made it worth the trip, hardly any animals poorly sign posted felt like you were walking up a mountain to see the lions to find nothing but a bench and a view over edinburgh
The panda's alone are reason enough to take a trip to this lovely zoo. There's helpful staff and volunteers dotted all over the place, all willing to stop and have a chat. Visited first thing so it was pretty quiet to begin with, but gets busier over lunchtime. Plenty of public transport from the centre, and the drivers annohunce when its the next stop :)
A beautiful zoo and perhaps the best in the UK. Easy to drive or take a bus to. So much to see and do. You definately need a full day. Such rare animals with Panda and Koala bears being the most incredible to actually get to see. The Penguin area known as Penguin Rock is amazing. You get so close up to their nesting areas and there is even a daily penguin walk where anything from 5 to 25 penguins parade past everyone..its so funny! Fantastic views of Edinburgh and the surrounding hills from the picnic area at the top of the zoo park. Cannot recommend this zoo enough. It really is beautiful!
Go on a dry day and wrap up warm unless the general temperature is summer like. A few degrees colder than Edinburgh itself. Prebook panda experience at Information or before arrival. Watch out for koala sleep times (12 to 2) for us

Good standard budget hotel at Murrayfield (probably horribly busy during the Six Nations Rugby Union Tournament in Feb/March) 2 miles from Edinburgh City Centre. Good bus service right outside the door and the owners are happy for you to leave your car in their car park, so excellent for sightseeing, close to Edinburgh Zoo as well.

Lovely stay at Dalmore. Great location and really wonderful. Iain was great and very helpful with directions. Highly recommend visiting Edinburgh Zoo if you’re staying.
We spent the day at Edinburgh Zoo and I was really impressed. It had a lot to live up to as we visit Chester Zoo several times a year. Generally, the amount of space for the animals was good. I was particularly impressed with the members of staff who were doing their research with the monkeys. It was the monkeys choice whether it wanted to take part and they weren't forced to. The members of staff that I talked to were very knowledgeable and I learnt a lot whilst there. The penguins enclosure was fantastic and it is the best that I have ever seen. The day that we visited was very rainy but this did not spoil our experience as there were plenty of areas to keep dry. Well worth a visit and I would definitely go again.
