Although Windermere has the most transportation options, restaurants, hotels and shops, it is extremely crowded with big city traffic. Neighboring lakes are just as it more charming and much quieter. This was my first time to the Lakes District, and I would skip Windermere in the future for other lakes.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial period. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847. Historically forming part of the border between Lancashire and Westmorland, it is now within the county of Cumbria and the Lake District National Park.
It is beautiful, sunset over Windermere very relaxing. We did a yellow cruise to the south of the lake . around 40 min sail, so peaceful. Our 4 day trip wasn't long enough, but then it never is. Can't wait to go back
Get up early if you want to hire a boat at busy times. There are long queues. We went on Easter bank holiday. Weather was great so it was very busy both on and off the lake. We hired a boat for two hours picking it up at 9.30 whilst the lake was very q
Investigate the Windermere Cruise options and use that as your transport to get to various villages along the lake shore. (You can get off and get on a later ferry). We were self-driving and so we investigated a couple of tour packages on option to include stops for ourselves outside of Windermere too.
Bowness-on-Windermere
This is a nice, local owned guest house. Very quiet (top floor) with bathroom en suite. Right on the main road, so great access by car. Parking 200 feet away, GBP19 for 3 24 hour days, free after 6 PM. Walking distance to the boat rental/ride dock. Walking distance to at least 30 restaurants and pubs as well as a couple of convenience stores. Highly recommended though far from deluxe, very comfortable and supremely convenient location in Bowness near Lake Windermere.
Lovely hotel close to lake Windermere, comfortable rooms, wonderful decor and reminiscence of Beatrix Potter throughout. Delicious food and drinks and beautiful garden for sunny days. Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere in easy reach; ferry to Hawkshead on the west side of the lake is also close by which makes it great for day trips around the lake
Bowness-on-Windermere
This place is an absolute gem ! Made to feel very welcome before you arrive and throughout the stay. The location in our opinion was ideal. Facilities in the room are excellent and the warmth extended by Jenny and David is genuine. Very dog friendly too ! Great location as a BSEE for exploring the whole of lake Windermere and all it has to offer
Outstanding service from the staff. They are professional, friendly and very attentive. Beautiful views of lake Windermere and pleasant surroundings. The hotel gardens and grounds were immaculate. The food was excellent. Ideal place to stay for a relaxing holiday in the Lake District.
The hotel location and quality of service was excellent. We asked for a view of Lake Windermere from our bedroom, and the view was stunning. The only fault with our stay was that the spa, which was part of the reason we booked this hotel, was unavailable or fully booked.
Bowness-on-Windermere
Great apartment with everything you need, spacious, well equipped, clean and modern. Location also excellent as it's up the hill from the middle of town, with some nice views of Lake Windermere, but still only a 10min walk in via a relatively flat shortcut.
Bowness-on-Windermere
A nice and cozy inn in a great location close to Lake Windermere. It was quieter than we expected from an inn and the selection of food for both dinner and breakfast was good. Good WiFi also.
Friendly staff. The location of the hotel next to Lake Windermere was excellent. The services seemed extensive but, to be fair, we only stayed one night.
Breakfast was tasty and location was stunning. Bowness is my happy place with the view of Lake Windermere.
Whilst on the Bowness Evening Lake Cruises, At the top of Orrest Head which overlooks the whole of lake windermere (short drive to windermere from bowness).
