Do not get put off by the Aberdeen town center. Walk or take a taxi to King's College and from there walk to St Machar's and the to the Seaside. Increible. And St Machar'sis a beautiful church in and awesome setting.
Beautiful, atmospheric, on the edge of Old Aberdeen and the university whoich started at the same time as Cambridge and Oxford. Stunning cobbled streets, and the amazing new library rising up as a modern cube. Also worth a. Is it is Seaton Park, right next to St Machar’s - massive heronry, deer and the lovely Don river. Check it out, worth the trip away from. The centre and it’s not that far!
Really worth the visit. Very helpful knowledgeable staff. The number of headstones on site was just overwhelming. The data written on many of the headstones was very enlightening and the "quality" of the deceased especially in the side section was incredible, almost a who's who of Aberdeen.
Steeped in history the cathedral is worth the visit purely for its incredible ceiling. Be warned though it is a long way out of the city centre so get a cab up there and then stroll back through the university grounds.
Though St. Machar's towering sandstones look already promising from outside, it impressed me with beautiful and detailed art deco-glass windows and a unique ceiling with the arms of many a king in Europe, Scottish clerics, and the Pope himself.
