This was definitely a highlight of my trip while in Santorini. The walk to remains of an old fortress called Skaros is not overly difficult, but if you decide to climb it, you will actually need to climb hands and feet at 90 Degree angles to get to the top of the rock and this can get a little bit tricky. Wear proper footwear and you’ll be fine. There is a pile of rocks forming an arch you have to climb up to get to the very top. The effort of getting to the top is well worth it, with great views in all directions. Take care on top, however, as there are some holes in the ground dropping into what must be the cellars of old buildings. I enjoyed it so much I climbed it twice and would do it every day if I stayed longer. I even had the whole top completely to myself for quite a while enjoying the most beautiful sunset. There is also a narrow rocky bridge that divides the front part of the rock and I would not recommended if you are not 100% confident. I crawled over, but only because I do this a lot on my travels and felt confident. This is not for social media snap, this is me challenging myself as I have a huge love for climbing. It is not for everyone and do think before you decide to go for it. Enjoy and stay safe:)
The footpath around the tip of the rock is very good and easy to walk, but getting to the very top is by pure rock climbing, and frankly you don’t see anything different to what you have already seen when walking just underneath it. If you really want to go for it, avoid light dresses and flip-flops, you will struggle, trainers and shorts will serve you much better. I would recommend that instead of exhausting yourself conquering that rock and breaking all your nails in the process, you continue following the path to the opposite side and finding a magnificent little church, hidden from the view of the main island. It is absolutely worth going down to see it, not the same as just looking from above. Very atmospheric and breathtakingly beautiful when you get there!
If there's only one thing that you will do on this island, then you definitely have to hike Skaros! It's one of the best adventures that you'll thoroughly enjoy solo and also with friends. Beautiful views 360 as well as challenging climb up to this magnificent rock that will surely take your breath away. And if you'll look deep within the other side of this rock, you'll have a beautiful church located a ways down further. It's a definite must to go a little further in your hike and you'll surely want to take even more pictures here at the church.
Skaros is beautiful to look at but only those with good hiking skills should try to climb it... Walk the rim of the caldera past Skaros to Oia so you can save your energy for the beautiful scenery you will want to enjoy! You can get great pictures of Skaros from almost anywhere in Imerovigli
Well worth the climb for a different perspective on Imerovigli. Look out for the old dwellings cut into the rocks. The path is mixture of steps and rocks, so wear suitable footwear. We went in the late afternoon in early June so it wasn't too hot. Enjoy!
Catch the sunset just above Skaros Rock (before the trail that leads down to the rock) or at the base of the rock after hiking the short trail there. Just beautiful. I would skip the crowds in Oia and come here. As far as hiking to the top of the rock itself, I didn't do that because it looked a little treacherous.
