Don't miss this experience--especially if you're a Sophia Loren fan--the neighborhood just can't forget that she did some filming here. A handful of shops, some nice restaurants, beautiful views, and a feeling that you've touched some part of Italian life that's fading away. For those that have a vivid imagination, imagine the pirate assaults and other invasions that made the people run through the ancient Greek gate for protection behind the walls and cliffs. But you wouldn't film a battle scene here today--too peaceful and picturesque.
Look for Salvatore!! Older gentleman who walks around collecting people for his tour to Capri. He saved us BIG TIME! Otherwise, we would’ve been waiting in horrible lines in tremendous heat. His small private bus was air conditioned. His tour included entrance to the Blue Grotto and the funicular train from the top back to the main plaza where you board the boats to the Mainland. He gives you tips where to eat and points out all the interesting spots such as Sofia Loren’s house. He will also take photos of you so everyone in your party is included. He’s a true gem with a great sense of humor. He also does tours to Pompeii and Vesuvius.
Another Sorrento "must see." You can check out the fresh fish that have just been brought in...or simply sit in a reclining chair on one of the docks and enjoy the view of the sea. The views walking down to the marina are spectacular.
There you can take the normal service of regular boats to Capri, Amalfi, Positano and other touristic places at Napoli cost. We also experienced a day cruise around the Capri Island with Luca's Boats (ask the contact at your hotel), starting ad ending at Marina Piccola of Sorrento, with a 3,5 hour stop at Marina Piccola in Capri, a very beautiful and cozy place. Lucas is a very pleasent Captain, and has a very comfortable motor boat for 12 people, and the tour is fantastic, and has a reasonable price per person (85-90 Euros). he forms the group, and collect people at the hotel, if needed. The tour also stops at the Grotta Azzurra, for a fast visit, if the group wants.
If you are planning to take a ferry trip get down very early. It is not worth booking online as you still have to queue for a boarding pass. It is also more expensive booking online as they charge a fee.Choose your ferry times carefully and do not get returns from the same company, pick the best return times there is not a lot of cost difference. The ferry costs are very high to Naples about 30 euros return with the train being only about 8 euros but get the direct train as the others stop everywhere.
Wonderful, lovely sea-side restaurant with friendly wait staff. Terrific Calamari. Capri excursions right at the dock. Hydrofoil from Naples docks here. Little sandy beaches. The best of all was Surriento Suites, managed by Pamela ~ a wonderful girl who made my stay perfect.... nightly treats baked by her mom, a stocked refrigerator and the views of Vesuvius across Naples Bay were just lovely. It hit all the highest marks I could give, 10 out of 10 !!!
