Kamikochi is really beautiful! Surrounded by many mountains and has rivers/streams/forests too. There are also a lot of informative boards around that provide more details about the nature/environment around e.g. types of trees, altitude, geography info. Many signs around so you won't get lost too. Kamikochi is quite popular as there were quite a lot of people around when we went. I would recommend going early so you can have a leisurely stroll and see many areas around kamikochi without worrying about the time. Do make sure to check the weather forecast beforehand. We postponed our trip to kamikochi by a day because it was raining the previous day. When the weather is clear, the mountain views are really amazing! The temperature can be quite variable, it was really cold in the morning (around 10 degrees celsius?) when we reached at 7+am, but it gradually became warmer and got quite sunny and hot towards noon (around 26 degrees celsius?). We went in late June. Anyway, so do be prepared for both cold and hot weather on the same day, ideally bring both thin clothes and thick jackets. A cap would be really useful for blocking the sun too, because it can get really bright. Most of the tracks are relatively flat and easy to walk on if you don't intend to climb the mountains. It is quite a nice and relaxing trek around. Do still wear sports shoes for a more comfortable trek since the ground still tends to be soil and sometimes with rocks around. It's a nature area so do expect that there will be some insects around, they don't pose much of a big problem though. Around kamikochi there are many spots around that are good for sitting down to rest, some with tables too. For us we also brought onigiri to eat for lunch, which is good because we can choose to stop anywhere on the way and eat. Of course, do bring your own trash bag to keep the trash first! Enjoy your trip to Kamikochi :)
The place is very popular with coach loads of tourists arriving to fill the nature trails. Try to get there early by getting one of the earliest services from Matsumoto (from around 5am). Also, try to get of the valley trails and up into the mountains for great views. I would only recommend a visit of the forecast is for fine weather given the expense of getting there.
1. To save time, leave the bus at Taisho Pond station and walk to Kappa Bridge, then return to Matsumoto from the Kamikochi terminal. 2. To avoid facing the sun while walking, start walking from Taisho Pond in the afternoon. 3. to avoid the trouble of changing to train, try to take the 16:00 or 16:30 direct bus back to Matsumoto.
Equip yourself well especially if you are planning to go as far as Tokusawa which is a 2-hour walk from the bus terminal. We were caught by the weather coming back - rather heavy rain and very windy which makes umbrella not usable.
The property was in a nice little town (Hirayu onsen), walkable to all restaurants, coin laundromat, a little convenience store, and a bus stop that goes to Kamikochi, Takayama, Aizu-Wakamatsu. This little town had great restaurants and places that are open real late. There was an onsen, a large lobby sitting area, yukatas and slippers provided. The onsens were really relaxing, with both indoor and outdoor options. Staff was there to help when needed, especially when wanting to explore the area.
The private onsen was awesome and the room was spacious and calm. Breakfast and dinner were very good. We were easily able to drive to nearby destinations - Shin-Hotaka Ropeway, Kamikochi, Takayama, Norikura, etc. There is a beautiful view of the mountains from the deck on the third floor. And there is a small playground structure in front of the hotel for kids. Especially with the private onsen, the large room, and the service, we felt the hotel was a very good value for money.
We had a large comfortable room with a wonderful bath looking out over the mountains. The ability to reserve the private outdoor bath was also a treat. We made use of the hotel’s free shuttle service to Kamikochi which was very efficient. If only we had known about it in advance we would not have prepaid our bus tickets in Takayama.
Very strategic place for those who plan to go to Shirakawago or Kamikochi. Plus, the owner also speaks English so not a problem for foreigners. Recommended for family trip.
Best value to go visit Kamikochi Just a few minutes from the bus station (20-25min bus ride to Kamikochi station)
Onsen was nice. Great location to Kamikochi.
