The park is nice to walk or jog around, but when it comes down to it, there is not much to see aside from a few walls. The palace grounds are only occasionally open to the public. I recommend skipping this unless you are in the area.
I followed free japan tour guide which available at 10am and 12noon. You need to be at kikyomon gate at 9am queuing as only 300 tourist can go each rour or in a day(i forgot about this). The tour was around 1 to 2 hours..walking around the garden n important building n tower in imperial palace.
Not worth visiting for too long. The part of the park that can be visited is nice (perhaps better in autumn), but not as scenic as some others in the city (like Rikugien or Hamarikyu). One cannot get too close to the actual buildings and the overall site is rather far stretched, so it takes a bit of time to see it. There are other sights offering more value for time (from my perspective), as for instance Meiji jingu.
There are 2 that we saw. The palace in Kyoto (the original) is all but closed. You can walk around the grounds and see the outsides of the buildings but that's it. Considering everything else we say this was a let down. The Tokyo palace is of course active so you can't actually get to the actual palace. Nice area, nice gardens, it's worth a walk around.
You can wander around the grounds for free and they are quite, quite beautiful. There is a small museum in the grounds and a shop too. The walls are impressive and the gardens are simply exquisite. Beautifully laid out with magnificent trees, planting and ponds. The only downside is that there is a lot of tarmac but that’s presumably because there is a high footfall.
The Gardens are beautiful and it's large so be prepared to walk for awhile and take your time. Be aware you have to get tickets in advance to the Palace, it's first come first serve and once the allotted amount of tickets are sold, that's it, they don't let anyone else in. You can get the info from the guard's gate. I never saw anything posted online or any mention of this on any blogs or vlogs. So we weren't able to see the inside of the Palace because we didn't have the tickets and we thought we could waltz in and pay for admission, but that wasn't the case. Next time I go back to Tokyo I'll make sure I see it.
