Great and actually educational place. Plenty of rooms and areas have some kind of description and texts are in English! Unlike some other places where there is only Arabic and French (Eng is my second language). The place overwhelmed us with its size, historical aspect and the number of storks living in there - at one time there was over 40 of them and all of them clapping with their beaks.
The El Badi palace is an architectural ensemble built at the end of the 16th century. Former palace, it was built by the Saadian sultan Ahmed al-Mansur Dhahbi to celebrate the victory over the Portuguese army, in 1578, in the battle of the Three Kings. Today, there remains only a huge esplanade carved gardens, planted with orange trees and surrounded by high walls. Indeed, in 1696, the Alawite sultan Moulay Ismaïl took what was richest in this palace to build the imperial city of Meknes. Since 2011, the El Badi Palace has been used as a stage for the Marrakech Laughter Festival, organized by Jamel Debbouze.
The place is not in a great shape but you can see how magnificent it used to be. I hope they reconstruct it one day. I loved the orange tree grove and the pools in the middle of the area. Do not forget to visit the background part - the are remains of an old prison.
The remains are remarkable. It is such a shame that a lot of the lustre has been removed from the building and surrounds by looting by previous dynasties. I found the site reminiscent of the Real Alcázar in Seville, and it would have been magnificent if it was intact and well maintained.
