Set in Istanbul, 984 feet from Hagia Sophia, Genius Hotel Istanbul offers accommodations with a bar and private parking. Great location. They tried to vary breakfast, which was a lovely thing to do.
It is nothing quite as bright as seen in pictures. It would have been of great significance in the life of Istanbul's then population that used its waters and of course the engineering skills that went into building it, but I feel there are a lot of other things one can spend time marvelling at in Istanbul rather than spend extra to see the basilica cistern. It wasn't even covered under the Turkey Museum Pass that we had, which gave access to virtually every place we wanted to go all over the country.
The Basilica Cistern, is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul, Turkey. Another architectural masterpiece of Ancient Greek architecture, Byzantine architecture. One of my most favorite places in Istanbul. Must visit a place.
I'll keep saying this...go first think in the morning to avoid crowds and have lots of room for you to take pictures. I'm glad I went - if you don't, look at the pictures and videos and you'll see what you missed.
I thought that I was going to see water in it. It’s almost empty and even though pictures come up beautiful it’s not in person. However, it’s very inexpensive to go in and impressive that this was created under ground back in the days.
Read the history of this place. Make sure you go when it is not really crowded so you can get enough time to appreciate the Medusa carvings. once you see them, you will probably wonder how they were made this well this long ago. The place is awesome if you are interested in history, religion, culture and symbolism. If they allow you to get your coffee or tea inside then go for it, it will be something worth spending an hour or more exploring.
The stairs to go down to the main level as in good condition but a bit dark. Be prepared with a flashlight or cell phone light to make decent easier. The fish in the cistern were put there by the Romans as an early warning system (think canary in the coal mine).
The hotel has a great location, 5 minutes from the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar and Kapali Carsi. There are a lot of restaurants and shops around. The people working there are kind and nice, the woman who works in the kitchen and prepares breakfast is very nice and speaks three foreign languages. Breakfast is wonderful and varied, there is something for everyone.
