Go there at daytime, walk the trail. It is short and easy and you get a great view. Come back in the evening for the lightning ceremony. Do NOT eat there. The food is boooooooring, barely edible. Eat in Keystone 2 miles away, plenty of good choices at fair prices.
The government decided to do construction in the middle of July at Mount Rushmore. A dump truck and safety scrim were erected directly in front of the Avenue of flags. Really a despicable gesture on behalf on the part of the government to choose to do that to families who took their time and spent their money to see a national monument only to find a dump truck marring their view. No respect for this country’s taxpayers.
Luckily I've been there before so I wasnt as disappointed as some in my party, but the area was under construction and we couldn't walk around and explore as much. We got there in the evening and stayed for the lighting if the faces with a program. Well....after waiting and waiting and waiting, the lighting never happened....technical difficulties apparently. Big disappointment. I talked to one lady who sadly got there after dark and never got to see the faces. She had never been before and was so bummed. I told her to make sure she came back in the morning as it was worth the view. It's still worth a visit despite the construction and setbacks.
Go during the week. Hardly any traffic. Take cash with you to pay for parking, none of the machines would take credit card. They were doing construction at the monument, so we couldn’t get too close. If you take the highway back more from the main monument, there is a turnout on the left side of the road to get a cool side view of George Washington.
If you go during the day, take the hike to the base of the mountain monument. Also, be sure to return before the appropriate seasonal time for the patriotic lighting show. If you are a vet (as I am) you can also take part in the flag ceremony.
Absoulty incredibilty. A tribute to some of America's best and the men and women who went forth to keep the beauty of the USA national parks a place to preserve and be proud of for all future generatious to experence. Thank you to the Park Rangers who we found to be a wealth of knowledge. All of thlis was awsome.
