Wow! What a place! One of the best Guesthouse I ve seen in Japan. Beautiful and comfortable, little shop (useful when you arrive tired from the walk) and amazing onsen inside, absolutely wonderful.

Two private onsens; right on the river where you can dig your own onsen and have it fill with natural warm water; delicious meals; very friendly staff who assisted us with a luggage shuttle at late notice.

I hope nothing ever changes in this Ryokan. It was a really special place to stay. The Onsen is so beautiful and the hotel itself is full of character. The meals were incredible each morning and evening. The staff were so welcoming and friendly.

This was one of the best hotels I stayed at in the Kumano Koda area. It exceeded my expectations from the moment I arrived. The staff at the front desk were very helpful and went out of their way to assist me with travelling around the area. They have a free shuttle bus to take you to the Hongu shrine town. My room was awesome and the food in the restaurant was fantastic for both dinner and breakfast. The best part was the outdoor onsen overlooking the river and mountains and being able to wear a light wrap in it as it was mixed with males next door. The view was spectacular. Some staff were able to converse in English.

The onsen! There were 3 onsen options: 1. Big thermal baths inside the main hotel building 2. Small external private baths in the main hotel building 3. Big natural thermal bath in the other side of the river I think the external private baths were a very welcome luxury. The location was isolated which is what we were looking for, very relaxing. The view from the rooms was like a painting and the river side and bridge were beautiful when surrounded by pink flowers. Breakfast was quite complete and tasty, it was never the same. The service was very attentive, without us asking they accompanied us after the check out to offer taking a picture of us on the nice bridge.

Absolutely amazing onsen hotel, great location, friendly staff, we also enjoyed the kaiseki dinner so much that we ordered it again. Same with the traditional breakfast. It doesn't get any more authentically Japanese than this, anywhere you go, quintessentially Japanese!

Whoever stays in this hotel also has access to the onsen of a nearby hotel, which is bigger and has a beautiful outdoor section overlooking the river.

Great place! Hongu is a wonderful town. Staff were nice and location next to the Temple was a bonus. Rooms and common facilities were clean. Hostel is well run by a Buddhist monk.
