Situated along Tanohara River and surrounded by tranquil nature in Kurokawa Onsen hot spring area, Oku no Yu Ryokan offers charming Japanese-style accommodation and various hot spring baths. • Onsen : The best I've tried so far (together with Gero). Has a really nice smell (unlike Beppu lol) and the temperature is perfect. There are also many different separate onsen baths which you can have for yourself for 1 hour if you ask. • Food : Overall great, standard Kaiseki meal (served in a dining room where each room is separated by a small movable wooden wall) • Staff : Very helpful and gave me the option to opt out of my room and go for a smaller one (cheaper) since my friend cancelled last moment and I ended up alone. • Location : As you can imagine, a great natural onsen is often in the countryside, you do have a bus that goes from Aso station (Kumamoto) all the way to Hakata station (Fukuoka) which stops by Kurokawa which is helpful. The ryokan's staff also pick you up at the bus stop if you inform them of your arrival time.

Featuring a spa bath, Shikinosato Hanamura is located in Minamioguni. This ryokan provides free private parking and a 24-hour front desk. This hotel was the highlight of our travel. Special cultural experience of ryokan + onsen. We enjoyed the dinner and breakfast. Yes, a bit expensive, but you will remember it your whole life. A must during the stay in Japay

Set in Minamioguni in the Kumamoto region, Ryokan Yamanoyu offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to a hot spring bath. Loved everything about this ryokan, staff were really kind, food was exceptional and onsens were very good too.

Built in 1722, Okyakuya is situated in the historical district of Kurokawa Onsen district. Located only 100 metres from Kurokawa Onsen, Free WiFi is provided and private parking is available on site. Cannot recommend this ryokan enough. Amazing service, clean rooms, and one of the best service from the staff in my experience (all were exceptionally friendly and helpful). Great attention to detail as well (left our shoes by the heater so when we checked out our feet were nice and warm). The food is also another highlight. Dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious. If you’re not a fan of horse sashimi, do not worry, the taste is not strong. Light enough for you to try something new and finish the portion. Onsens were also great. I love how they swap female and male baths depending on the time of day so you can try all they have to offer. There’s also two private baths as well for couples who want to go together. Place is also tattoo friendly (my husband had on his shoulder but it was not brought up). Thanks for an amazing stay!

Boasting an open-air bath, garden and views of mountain, Hanare no Yado Hanagokoro is set in Minamioguni, 40 km from Mount Aso. Beautiful room in a wonderful setting. Fabulous Japanese cuisine. Very helpful catering for a non meat eater.

Kurokawa Onsen Yama no Yado Shinmeikan features 5 hot-spring baths, including a 30-metre long cave bath. The staff was extremely helpful, parking our car for us and helping us navigate. The cave onsen was stunning, as the cave was much larger than I expected and very interesting, and the water was very relaxing. The food was also incredible!

Located in the centre of Kurokawa Onsen, Oyado Noshiyu offers outdoor and indoor hot-spring baths, Japanese-style accommodations and a traditional teahouse. So green and beautiful and healing, like a magical hot spring treehouse tucked in a tiny mountain town. Exquisite food, soothing springs, lots of cozy nooks for lounging and resting all around the inn.

Located in Minami Aso in the Kumamoto Region, 10 km from Naka-dake, Hotel Yumeshizuku boasts a hot spring bath and sauna. Each room at this hotel is air conditioned and features a flat-screen TV. Worth the trip, and you can communicate in English.

Situated in the centre of the Kurokawa Onsen Area and boasting a total of 8 indoor/outdoor hot spring baths, Nanjoen offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with tatami (woven-straw) flooring... Gorgeous traditional ryokan, with beautifully appointed rooms—we had one of the en-suite onsen baths, and I highly recommend it! The dinners and breakfasts were sumptuous and almost too much food, all very delicious. The staff is friendly, impeccable, and very helpful. The area itself is also lovely, with plenty of shops and nearby onsens to explore.
