They really cater to making the most of the regional Tochigi cuisine and specialties. Room was clean and all the amenities were well though out and high quality. The room with the open air bath was well worth it alone so everything else was a bonus. I did not check out the public bath due to tattoo policy.

I was originally interested in this hotel because I read that the Onsen had a Museum full of Kishio Suga's work. I had been following this amazing Japanese artist for a number of years... so that fact was a deciding factor for me. But, the Onsen, the staff, the care that we felt they put into everything they did, the atmosphere of the place, the gardens also designed by Kishio Suga, the delightful guests we had the pleasure of meeting, our room and the food we were served - and let's not forget the tour of the museum! - made me love this place. Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya has history. Someone told us that the Onsen was 500 years old. Most of the Japanese guests we met there went to purely relax. The kind and capable staff take amazing care of all the guests: A Japanese friend in Tokyo told me I should celebrate the Winter Solstice while I was in Nasushiobara. She explained that on that one day, it had always been traditionally celebrated by putting YUZU fruit in Japanese baths and eating something made of pumpkin. I asked the hotel about all this. I really don't think it was part of their plan... but, they did it all: the YUZU in the baths and the specially prepared Pumpkin desserts. It was all to please us, their guests, and make sure our stay was perfect. I was so grateful and felt so pampered and happy. I enjoyed that fruit in the Japanese bath more than you can imagine. So, If you want to relax in a beautiful Onsen with history, go see great art at the. Suga museum, to have a beautiful experience, and be pampered in a very Japanese sort of way...you must come to Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya.

It was our first time staying in a ryokan, and it did gave us a really good impression. Property itself was nice, located in a small town beside the river. Room was facing the river so we can hear the soothing noise from the river. Dinner was excellent--food kept on coming, great quality, great variety. They even managed to cater our diet (without pork and alcohol). I love the outdoor onsen. It's very relaxing to soak in the hot water facing the river.
Breakfast was simple, but great. The (shared) indoor Japanese hot spring bath was clean, large, and free when we wanted to use it.
The facilities - onsen and library. The little resting area outside the onsen was also nice. Complimentary drinks and snacks. The library had a good selection of novels and mangas and pods for reading. The onsen was good - indoor and outdoor. Good ventilation in the indoor onsen as I often get lightheaded in other onsens due to bad ventilation. The outdoor onsen was cool. The dormitory was more spacious than expected.
Amazing Ryokan for a great price! The staff was incredibly nice, everything was very clean and the Onsen amazing. Whenever it's free you can go in and enjoy the Onsen for yourself! The location is great to walk to all the sightseeing spots in Nikko and the bus stop is about a 10 min walk away to get to the Lake & the train stations. Would highly recommend!
Lovely place close to the river in a residential area of Nikko. Friendly owners, big traditional Japanese style room (definitely a must try for one night), very clean and quiet, private onsen. I was interviewed by the Japanese TV and ended up on channel 3 news the very evening, so I feel like a movie star now!
Nice location away from busy cities. Like an adventure. Hiking options. Nice variety of hot springs. But the outdoor onsen for men only should be reopened as soon as possible
Super clean and organised kitchen, welcoming lounge area with good WIFI, spacious rooms (stayed in a 4 bed dormitory) and free of charge Onsen Spa that is open till midnight. The hot spring spa after a long active day was just perfect.
Easily accessible location. The private furo (onsen) is a big plus, not seen in other properties. It offers the authentic hot spring experience but you have the entire bath on your own. The overall vibe is also great, with spacious lounge area and self-service pantry area. Room facing the back of the hotel has no noise at all for a great night sleep. The staff is also very friendly and we had a great time chatting.
I loved my stay at this hotel and would definitely come back! The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was way bigger than expected, very clean with all needed amenities. The small outdoor onsen was a definitely a plus! The location near the bus station with the lake view is perfect for exploring the region and hiking around. The dinner was copious and delicious, with different meals every night.
