We had access to a variety of onsens at Oku No Yu, my personal favorite was the Riverside Onsen (mixed) where you could see the waterfall, amazing view ! Not only do you have access to different unique onsens, you also have access to a sauna and cold bath. The traditional breakfast was also a very unique experience and the food was delicious. Finally, the staff was always helpful and patient with us, the room was really comfortable and cozy as well ! It was overall such a great place to stay at, definitely worth it !!

Located in the heart of the city, Hotel Nikko Kumamoto features accommodations with free wired internet access and views of Kumamoto Castle. Amazing hotel, close to the castle. Staff were absolutely attentive. The room was huge and with castle views. Very convenient if you are taking the coach line to Yufuin or Kurokawa, as the bus station is in front of the hotel.

Located in Kikuchi and only 18 km from Hirayama Hot Spring, 民泊サライ七城 provides accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. We chose Kikuchi instead of Kumamoto, to get away from the city before our trip to Mt Aso. We got a lovely country house, but the main benefit was the lovely couple who hosted us. Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

Omusubi guest house (JAPANESE STYLE） is a recently renovated guest house in Mamihara, where guests can make the most of its free bikes and garden. Rie is such a wonderful and kind host. Although we stayed just one night, she made it so memorable. The moment we arrived she helped us with an excellent dinner recommendation and reservation and walked us over - explaining the history of the area to us. She even made sure that the accommodation was heated up before we arrived. I can't recommend this place and Rie enough.

43 km from Mount Aso, hostel+cafe たね is a recently renovated property situated in Hōgano and features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and private parking. The breakfast for just Y1000 and coffee for Y500 was the best part of our stay! And that's saying a lot because we loved it all. She is such a good cook and he roasts the coffee on premises! So good.
