The individual rooms meant you get to meet lots of other guests both locally and internationally. The location is on a quiet street, short walk from Samegai JR station (which unfortunately does not have an escalator) The Ryokan has been renovated beautifully, plenty of space to read, chat, eat and relax. The Ryokan has well thought out shared bathrooms, toilet and a small kitchenette with a kettle, small fridge and microwave available for use. The Ryokan is very clean with fresh towels provided everyday. The host Usui san cooks breakfast and dinner daily upon request, but you are free to buy food and eat it at the Ryokan.

Well located and the historic neighborhood walking distance from almost every site. The bathroom building was very nice and modern and clean. The main house building was also very spacious and comfortable. The bikes were great for getting around town. And I absolutely loved the private Japanese garden in between the two buildings. even in the winter snow, it made it a delight to go back-and-forth between the two buildings to use the restroom or shower. I would have enjoyed staying another day. Thank you for offering such a restful and peaceful place to stay. I enjoyed my time here much more than I expected. It was lovely.

Marumo Ryokan is an authentic Japanese ryokan and is hands down the best we’ve ever stayed at. The rooms are beautiful and spacious, it is impeccably clean, and the meals are a delicious traditional feast. The hosts are very accommodating and thoughtful. We took the train to Omi-Iwazu and then rode back to Omi-Takashima, where we rented bikes to visit the Shirahige shrine. We also went to Makino to spend some time at the beach. Our entire group of five wished we had planned to stay for 2 or 3 nights instead of one. It was a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the rest of our trip and we would hands down all choose to stay there again!

The entire stay from check in to check out was exceptional. We went as a family with our 4yo and 8mo and they had all the facilities we needed including high chairs (a selection) for the kids as well as a kids menu, toy borrowing service and books. The public baths were beautiful. Make sure to try them all! We had the kaiseki dinner in a private room which was delicious and meant the kids being a little noisy didn't bother anyone. Our room overlooked Lake Biwa and it was very comfortable.
