Our host, Hicham, had already sent us a message that morning saying he was expecting us and would be happy to help if we had any questions. He also offered their private taxi service so we wouldn’t have to look for transportation ourselves, which was already a kind gesture. When we arrived at the accommodation, he welcomed us with mint tea in the beautiful mosaic-tiled entrance hall and offered us the option of choosing an upstairs room instead of a ground-floor one, if we wished. We took the upstairs room, which was spacious and well kept. The air conditioning worked well, and we didn’t feel cold at night, even though the weather was quite cool. The next morning, the breakfast really surprised me because it was plentiful, with fruit, eggs, pancakes, and pastries. Hicham gave us a map of Fez and explained how to get to the main sights within the medina, as well as what to pay attention to when walking around the city in the evening. The accommodation is in a very good location; everything can be reached on foot. (Google Maps works very well on mobile phones in Fez as well. We bought a SIM card with 50 GB of data at the airport from the Orange provider, and it worked perfectly even in the narrow, hidden streets, so we didn’t feel lost in the evenings either.) I would also like to specifically mention the laundry service, which worked very well. We handed in our clothes in the morning, and by the evening they were clean and neatly folded on our bed. It’s very reasonably priced, and Hicham almost didn’t want to accept the money for it :) We asked him whether he could recommend a desert tour from Fez to Marrakech. Of course, he immediately recommended two options: 1 night / 2 days, or 2 nights / 3 days. We chose the latter and the company he recommended, “Desert Life Tours.” We were able to arrange the booking on the spot. Situated within 4.5 km of Royal Palace Fes and 600 metres of Karaouiyne, Riad Dar Timrad features rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom in Fès. Perfect location, the staff are very nice and are helpful when planning activities and booking restaurants. The roof terrace is beautiful and has an amazing view right over the city. The breakfast every morning was a highlight as well. We would stay here again.

Offering a garden and garden view, Dar Rihanne is set in Fès, 4 km from Royal Palace Fes and 800 metres from Karaouiyne. Another fantastic option. It has all the usuals you expect from a beautiful historic home within a Moroccan Medina but this one has a giant tree within it, as well as a terrarium for turtles. It also has an epic sunset spot where I also had my breakfast. The host Mohammed is awesome. My room was really cool because it was like a hidden cave in one corner of the house. The bathroom is private but located on another floor. It’s actually a good thing because you’re not staring at the toilet from your bed like most places. Best air conditioning I had so far this trip. I actually got the room TOO cold at one point!

Riad Ranya is situated in the Fes El Bali district of Fès, 3.3 km from Royal Palace Fes, 1.1 km from Batha Square and 1.2 km from Medersa Bouanania. Very friendly service and very testy dinner. Overnight stay in the old quarter in a several hundred year old building. A great experience.
