We spent three wonderful nights here in May. The cabins are cozy and comfortable and are equipped with everything you need. Cabins are heated with electric heat and there is also a wood stove if you’d like to have a fire. The location is fantastic – tucked away on a hillside overlooking the historic Stalheim Hotel and the surrounding mountains and an easy 15 minutes drive to Flam. Flam can be busy with tour buses and cruise ships; Stalheim feels like a world away from that. Marit was a great host. She greeted us when we arrived and gave us lots of great information about the area and suggested things to see and do. This place is really something special!

For us, the Mountain Lodge was the absolute perfect place for our hiking holiday - so perfect we ended up staying an extra night. If you love nature, this is the place for you. We went into every direction to hike and had breathtaking views every day we went out. What I am saying is: the location of this place was everything we could hope for. The Lodge itself is run by very caring and kind people, the rooms are 'homey' (we loved the wood) and the communal kitchen was a place where we had interactions with people from all around the globe. All the amenities are kept clean but you have to go with the knowledge that this is more like a hostel than a hotel, which means shared bathrooms, showers and kitchen are not going to look squeaky clean for the entire day. We loved it all the same. The place also has a very rich history, which is worth asking about or researching on your own. The way down from the train station is a hike on its own, so don't bring a big suitcase or you will have to haul it down a very small and steep path. One more tipp: if you keep your eyes open and stay patient you can see norway lemmings up in the mountains (they look like hamsters and are pretty cute).

Historic Jaunsen Gjestgjevarstad offers home-cooked Norwegian cuisine, free Wi-Fi, and free private parking. Voss is 25 minutes’ drive away. After dinner in house (highly recommended) we were treated by our host to sample some of the local apple cider and a history of the guesthouse.
