Xining is a quiet little city. It has a few historic sights and we enjoyed the Qinghai Provincial museum. A lot of the buses are quite crowded though, regardless of time of day. The air quality is decent and there was a nice breeze during our stay in August. It has an interesting mix of cultures.

Xining is a lively city in the geographically secluded area of Qinghai. There are many development projects that is quickly changing Xining into a modern city. The pollution at Xining is not nearly as bad as other major Chinese cities, however still comparatively severe compare to other countries' major cities. Qinghai Lake is a close bus or taxi ride away from Xining and is definitely a must see.

Great place to visit and experience. Qinghai and Chaka Yan Hu are MUST go to sights!

The city itself is okay, I guess you can also have a nice stay over there, but you especially should go for the surrounding nature! We went to Qinghai lake and to Kanbula National Park - but there are many other places waiting!

I really liked the city. The parks and flower gardens are beautiful. Went to Qinghai lake which was a bit disappointing because too many tourists not enough lake experience. The lake is beautiful but there were barrier between you and the lake. My favorite thing was the green garden and flower park. I went twice. Truly beautiful.

I'vebeen to Qinghai lake next to Hainan. But not Hainan it self. Qinghai make is really beautiful and worth seing. Although its a pity bises only run in the morning or early afternoon to and from Xining. I wanted to go the Chaka yanhu but the busses scheduals are reallynot convinient. For sure having a car helps greatky to design your trip as you wish.

We stayed at the Sofitel Xining which is a beautiful hotel with rooms and apartments. Opt for a two bedroom apartment if you have 4 adults or are a family of 4. The apartment comes with 2 bedrooms and a study with two bathrooms and 3 TV sets. There's even a kitchen, living room and dining area. The hotel has an authentic Brazilian restaurant Do Brasil. We ate all our in-house meals there because the food was simply too good. We visited the Xiaqiong Lama Monastery about 2 hours' drive from the hotel. We spent an afternoon driving past vast landscapes and winding roads. From a distance, you will catch a glimpse of the Founding Lama as he is represented in the form of a Gold Statue. At the monastery, the scripture hall was probably the most amazing with the many rows of low seating and solemn atmosphere. As you end the monastery, there are stupas lining the only road leading into the monastery. Upon our return, we stopped by a local eatery to dine on local food. Unless you like red meat, you'd probably find the food lacking in flavours. We visited a wholesale centre which sold cordyceps and black goji berries (these two prized commodities are grown and harvested in this region); both touting high medicinal value. I would have wanted to go to a Thangka museum or to Qinghai Lake but the weather in late September is not ideal for the latter. It is too cold and required an overnight stay at the Lake area.
