A hidden natural wonderland
Located 100 km south-east of Berlin, the unique and UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, captivating Spreewald is characterised for its plant life on wetlands and for its pine forests on drier areas. It has over 18,000 species of flora and fauna. The area also contains 200 small water channels, vast grasslands and natural hot springs.
The largest city of the area is Lübbenau, with its majestic centrepiece Lübbenau Castle. The city dates back to the Middle Ages, signs of this can be seen on the city walls and museum. After visiting the old town, visitors can cruise along the winding web of tree-covered waterways on a traditional punt (flat bottomed boat). Visitors can hire a boat or a bike and explore the local area with several cycling routes to the nearby villages around Spreewald Biosphere Reserve.
Along with stunning forests, popular hiking, trail-walking and cycling routes, the region is also famous for its hot springs, which are located in Burg. The springs feature pools and spas which are perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing, cycling or hiking through the countryside.
Neighbouring Lübben has popular attractions such as Lübben Castle, Neuhaus Manor and the St Pancras fieldstone church.
