Bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north, the small Spanish region of Cantabria is known for undulating, lush landscapes which sharply rise to sheer peaks in the south-western Picos de Europa mountain range.
The capital Santander is an important port and has a long promenade lining its sandy beach. The coastline to the west is packed with Cantabria hotels on the beach, some of which are in Comillas. This small town has a number of interesting buildings, including Gaudí’s Capricho. West in the Oyambre National Park is San Vincente de la Barquera. In the east of the region, the rocks at Noja descend into crystal-clear waters, while Laredo’s curving bay ends in a hill that offers lovely views.
