I had booked quite a few overnight stays, on a road trip to Portugal. all of the hotels were four stars. This was one of the few, which lived up to it’s rating.

NH Gran Hotel Casino de Extremadura is next to the Guadiana River, 10 minutes’ walk from Badajoz city centre and Alcazaba Fortress. It offers free WiFi and houses the Gran Casino de Extremadura. The staff is very friendly and all our requests were met promptly. We had a nice room, comfortable with all the amenities. The location it’s nice, has a great restaurant.

Housed in a former convent, built in the 15th century, the Parador de Plasencia hotel has kept its stunning, original architecture, including spacious hallways, archways and courtyards. A beautiful old monastery right in the centre of Plasencia with very friendly and efficient staff. I spent just one night here with two friends in a pleasant, quiet triple room. Great towels, comfortable bed, nice furnishings and well functioning air conditioning for when it was 38 degrees outside! Breakfasting and eating in a parador can be expensive but luckily we found the restaurant/bar Bari nearby. It was so hot we only made it as far as the Bari, which is the first place you come to when you go out the front door, and fortunately the food was great. We had breakfast and dinner there. I would love to go back and stay at the Parador in Plasencia when the temperatures are more civilized.
