Everything's been spruced up, and the rooms are decorated with care. It's super close to the highway—actually, it’s the first hotel on the left as you head to Tournus. They greet you with such warmth. The breakfast and coffee? Absolutely amazing. The owner is always checking to see if anything needs refilling, like fruit, croissants, bread, cheese, or ham. Plus, you can park right in front of your room.

The couple who own and run this place are super nice and friendly. The place is beautifully constructed and furnished, comfortable, and clean. The breakfasts were delicious and I liked that you could order what you wanted so that food wasn't wasted. Marie went above and beyond in helping us out with some things since we were traveling several weeks. I also found this place to be of good value.

My recent journey led me to the Hotel de la Poste, a storied establishment managed by the ever-charismatic Julien Cohen. The Hotel de la Poste is much more than a place to rest—it's a living testament to Avallon’s vibrant history. Founded centuries ago as a stop for travelers and dignitaries alike, the hotel has hosted everyone from literary figures to royalty. Its walls echo with stories of grand celebrations and whispered secrets, giving every guest the sense of stepping into a narrative that continues to unfold. The rooms at Hotel de la Poste are a masterclass in blending historical charm with contemporary luxury. Each suite is individually decorated, featuring elegant French furnishings, sumptuous fabrics, and thoughtful touches that evoke a sense of timeless beauty. Modern amenities—such as high-speed Wi-Fi, climate control, and a state-of-the-art bathroom—were seamlessly integrated, offering every comfort without sacrificing character. A particularly memorable encounter was meeting Julien at his antique shop, Maison des Brocanteurs. His passion for history and storytelling was infectious, and he graciously shared insights into the treasures on display—a delightful extension of the hotel’s own character. Dining at Le 1815, the hotel’s acclaimed restaurant, was an unforgettable highlight. Le 1815 delivers culinary artistry at its finest. The sense of family and welcome permeated every interaction, making my husband and me feel not just like a guest, but cherished friends.

FAQs about hotels in Burgundy

Picturesque Land of Wine and Quiet Abbeys

One of the world’s most famous wine-making regions, Burgundy, has fascinating history and beautiful landscapes. Stunning Romanesque architecture, delicious cuisine and great cycling routes make it a great holiday destination!

Jump on the TGV train in Paris or Lille and start your journey through Burgundy from the region’s capital, Dijon, a thriving city with the world-renowned International and Gastronomic Fair. It was also the birthplace of the original Dijon mustard.

From Dijon, you can explore the entire Côte-d'Or department, the best known part of Burgundy, which produces the world’s finest and most expensive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Make sure a bottle of its quality product accompanies dinner consisting of one of the region’s specialties: coq au vin or beef bourguignon.

For a different kind of a spiritual experience, visit the historic abbeys, including the Vézelay Abbey in the Yonne department, featuring Mary Magdalene relics and for many, a starting point of their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Outdoor lovers can enjoy cycling alongside the region’s picturesque canals or admiring them from the widely available cruising barges. The lovely Morvan Regional Natural Park provides great routes for a quiet hike.

After a day spent in the vineyards and nature of Burgundy, one needs a place to put their head down. Booking.com offers a great variety of over 600 properties in the area: from a luxury chateau to smaller boutique hotels.

Escape from the stressful cities to a charming French village? This was the gem I was looking for. No buzzing cars, no background noise—just the soothing sounds of nature. At night, an owl chatters from its perch in the tree, and in the morning, you're greeted by dragonflies zooming by. From the first look at the property, everything shows great attention to detail, from the tasteful vintage decorations to the immaculate cleanliness (inside the rooms, it's a 10/10; outside, it’s a bit more lived-in, which adds character and avoids the sterile feel of a designer hotel). There are plenty of spots to sit and relax, including a swimming lane, a larger pool, a spacious spa that can be reserved privately, and a roomy terrace, all just a short walk away. It has very romantic vibes but is also perfect for those who want to disconnect and read or write a book. After touring the room and the grounds of the hotel, another delightful surprise awaited. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with an expertly crafted 7-course discovery menu called "Emotions," beautifully paired with their selection of wines. The dedication of Chef Maxime Lesobre and Chef Saé Haségawa to their craft was palpable in every course served. Having read the outdated Michelin Guide review afterwards, I felt it didn’t do justice to the symphony of flavors they managed to unleash. As for value for money, there’s no question—it exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend the experience, go for it. Finally, a special mention goes to the spa, which offers a genuine spa experience with a well-rounded selection of treatments and massages. It reflects the same dedication to quality and cozy atmosphere as the rest of the property. My only regret is not having had more time to fully indulge in everything they offer.

A modern, quirky hotel, each room following a different colour scheme. Very comfortable bed and effective shower. Excellent for the planned one night stop. Very close to the Motorway and also the centre of town where there are many good restaurants ( we liked Le Parisienne in the central square). Excellent breakfast featuring home made jam and boiled eggs. Good value for money - so much so we booked to stay on our return journey. Will use again.

The old town is small and quaint and is located along the river Saone. Old Town is easily walkable with the main area being about 10 x 12 city blocks in width with an additional newer and larger portion of town immediately to the south. It has nice historical charm and is centrally located between Paris, Geneva and Lyon. It took us about 1.5 hours in an Uber to get to town from the Lyon airport.

We visited with a group of friends for 3 days, which allowed us to see the town centre, the quays and the medieval buildings in Auxerre, but also to visit the cellars of Bailly Lapierre and taste their sparkling wine, the medieval chateau of St Fargeau, the village St Sauveur and the cute town of Chablis. Lots of day trips available, especially if you have a car. The town was very pretty, and the sunshine on the river was a bonus, coming from a damp Paris. A short trip from Paris with lots of options and visits nearby.

Loved that the breakfast was buffet as I had a hungry toddler with me. The fact that you can choose when to have your room cleaned was superb. Supermarket and bus stop few minutes away which was so convenient. How they have a 24hr machine to check you in even at 3am (my flight was delayed had no issues getting into my room) which was a big bonus!👍🏾

There are many, many places of interest to see and explore. For me, the highlights were the Cathedral and the historic churches such as St. Pierre and St. Etienne. In addition, I was glad that I made time for the Sanctuary of St. Bernadette and the Ducal Palace, which features a basement museum well worth the visit (although one only gets to see a tiny sliver of the Palace itself, and the rooms you do see contain nothing of interest). I spent a lot of time walking around taking pictures and thus ran out of time to do much else, sadly.

We stop in Nuits St Georges on drives from UK to South of France. Its perfectly mid way, great location from the motorway and has plenty to offer. The town center has been updated since our last trip and the mix of traditional architecture and modern stone and fountains in the center of town work well together. There are a number of bars and we sat at a really great bar with a fabulous vibe drinking great draught beer and people watching. After the long drive from Calais to Nuits St George we decided to skip a restaurant and hit the local Carrefour supermarket for wine and picnic items, but, in the past we've eaten at local restaurants and there are plenty to chose from. Great place to stop, relax and rewind for the onward journey.
