Nimes is a lovely town with the Amphitheatre and the Maison carre. The centre has lots of charming buildings and small pedestrian alleys with a multitude of restaurants, brasseries and cafés. Lots of great shops. At night-time, the small streets with bars are quite lively with people chatting. drinking and eating out on terrasses. There is a lovely atmosphere and people are friendly

We liked the very harmonious mix of ancient history and modern attractions. The map provided by the tourist office with 40 interesting points of interest marked for you to wander in your own time very useful. We had drinks in many places but ate in La Vigourie and IX Louis only. Both delicious and great value. Even though one of us has a few mobility problems walking around in short bursts worked fine; the town is small enough. Sunday market was excellent for end of season summer dresses, roast chickens and figs! Walking the ramparts (in flat shoes) is probably a must, educational animations along the way are well done with sub-titles. A week is a good stay length, take a short train ride to the sea-side ports, architectural surprises like La Grande Motte and out into the Camargue flats.

Le grau du roi is a beautiful compact fishing port. It is located along a bar and cafe canal like estuary. To sit whilst sipping a cold beer, enjoying a local wine or indulging in a splendid seafood meal whilst watching the boats returning in the evening or the sun setting over the lighthouse guarded quayside is heavenly.

A perfect location to visit Avignon avoiding the busy streets. The bus line connecting the village with the city is very frequent. Interesting small city with top class Roman remains (as big as Rome - though not so widely known). It is easy to move/walk around Nimes and I recommend it as a relaxing city. The Spanish themed Feria took place while I was there - great, enjoyable and lots of revellers - not relaxing but great fun for visitors of all ages. I hope you've got the picture. Enjoyable, lots of ancient sites, but up-to date entertainment and a relaxed atmosphere for all to enjoy. Finally, it's not a hilly city. Walkers can relax and take it at their own pace.
