Hotel in Chagford
Nestled in a wooded valley, Gidleigh Park features 107 acres of mature grounds, within the wilds of Dartmoor. With an award winning restaurant, this estate is just 6 minutes’ drive from Chagford. Everything! We were so sad to leave. We love travel so have stayed in some amazing hotels across the world (including other Relais & Chateaux properties), but after our stay at Gidleigh Park, we realized this might have been the BEST hotel ever - even including some very special Japanese ryokans. What made it so wonderful: - The staff were all so genuinely nice. We had a lot of odd requests (since I’m pregnant and my husband has very specific dietary preferences), and I’m sure they secretly thought we were total weirdos, but they did a great job covering this up - no request was too strange! Examples: 1.) my husband became addicted to Innocent smoothies during our stay in England and insisted on having some every day (…even in a Michelin-starred hotel), so they kept them in the fridge for us and brought out the bottles whenever he wanted to pour a glass; 2.) I went down each morning to have breakfast but my husband prefers to sleep in, so I would request a takeaway homemade croissant for him. This request alone wasn’t too bad perhaps, but the croissants were so good warmed up, so we would later request to have them warmed right before he ate them - which they kindly did… - The food is SUPERB - I could’ve eaten for weeks straight just at the casual lounge (we’d normally try the formal restaurant too, but saving this for next time when I have fewer pregnancy food restrictions, to fully enjoy!). Best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had, with perfectly poached golden-orange yolks (I’ve only ever seen such perfect eggs before in Japan), sumptuous afternoon tea, truffled cheese soufflé, really good strong pots of Earl Grey and Mini Pu Erh Cake (!) tea, amazing fresh fish and brothy beans… all in a cozy casual living room/conservatory setting where they let you open the patio doors, or sit outdoors (very nice if you’re being extra Covid-cautious while pregnant like me)!

Yelverton
We have stayed here a few times before. This is a fabulous place to stay. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful too. The food is very good. This is also a locals pub, servicing a small village, right by one of the best parts of Dartmoor. But this doesn't mean it gets too noisy, and it is certainly not unfriendly. They are very dog friendly too. But the rooms do not smell doggy, unlike some places. If you are visiting the Yelverton area, this is the hotel I would recommend.
Settled in the Dartmoor national park, it is a very quiet and comforting get away. You can have a short walk with children from there as well as long ones. Plenty of nice activities in the hotel (boardgames, crocket, tennis, walks). The place is full of charm and history. The staff is extremely kind and efficient. They made the stay easy for a single parent, offering private dining. The kids menu was varied, delicious and decently priced. The restaurant was a treat for me as well.
Fantastic location, close to the Abbey Inn, Buckfastleigh, the train to Totnes, and many options for walking the high moors or staying more local and swimming the Dart or walking Hembury, etc. hotel is very first class, clean, professionally run. I didn’t even realize it was attached to the Abbey until the second day. Restaurant breakfast was good, I didn’t eat dinner there. Staff was cheerful, polite, and helpful. Excellent option for a variety of trips to south Dartmoor!
Princetown
It was a wonderful experience, a 5-star welcome but in an informal and familiar context. Comfortable and spacious room, rich and varied breakfast, warm and relaxing environment. Within walking distance of the Dartrmoor Prison Museum and Visitor Centre (formerly Duchy Hotel) and in the heart of Dartmoor. Finally, Richard and Claire are wonderful hosts. Hope to return soon for new walks on the beautiful moor.
Postbridge
It was our first staying in hostel, but fortunately we had a Dartmoor. Everything was sparkling clean and room was very warm. Also we could have a tea at the spacious kitchen, which was great after our long journey. When we came at the hostel it was almost a midnight, so we could not have any chance to see what is outside. But on the next morning we were so amazed with nature of that area
We enjoyed a lovely relaxing time with excellent food. The hotel is set within beautiful Dartmoor park with Haytor in the distance. We enjoyed really amazing food in the dining room for both breakfast and dinner, and and a relaxing bottle of wine in the lounge. The staff was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The price is a really great value.
Chagford
It should be noted that this is pub (gastropub) with rooms attached so plan your expectations accordingly. it's quite a charming little town in Dartmoor but is hideously busy and cramped and difficult for cars to get around and find parking. It's nothing to do with the room but the pub does seem to do good food
Yelverton
Gorgeous location, we had the run of the gardens with lots of seating areas and it was so relaxing. The apartment was well kitted out and beautifully furnished. Simon and Judy were so welcoming and helpful. Great spot for visiting Dartmoor and Tavistock is close which is a lovely town. We'll be back for sure.
Located just a short walk from Haytor rocks, the moorland Hotel is an excellent base to explore Dartmoor. The hotel is very comfortable with friendly and efficient staff. The room was well equiped and even had a fan which was useful as the south facing room got warm during an unusual warm spell for October.
Moretonhampstead
The owners were lovely. Breakfast was delicious. This is a wonderful hotel in an excellent location to explore Dartmoor, and very affordable. The owners, and others we met in the village, kindly went out of their way to share helpful ideas about where to go and what to see.
The location was superb. You can visit Dartmoor National Park by foot, so that was great. The apartment was really nice and clean. There's a binder with all the information that you need, which was very helpful. The communication with the host went fluently.
The hotel provided quality dinner and a good breakfast. It is located next door to the Dartmoor National Park visitor centre, but it is based in a very peaceful location. The double room was spacious and offered everything we need for a pleasant overnight stay.
Yelverton
The staff was very friendly & helpful. We felt welcomed from arrival. The location is exceptional - quiet, peaceful - literally in the "middle of Dartmoor". The bed is very comfortable (soft - to my taste). The breakfast was very good.
Perfectly nestled in the middle of Dartmoor Park, this hotel has an attentive staff and spacious rooms. The bathroom, newly remodeled, featued an unusually large and comfortable shower (as well as a separate tub). Breakfast was excellent.
Ashburton
Kate and Nathan are fantastic hosts! The Breakfast was exceptional. The location is close to the Dartmoor National Park and other popular tourist spots in Devon. Good dining option at the nearby Dartmoor Lodge Hotel. Parking was not an issue.

Moretonhampstead
Home away from home. Lovely comfortable apartment in the heart of Moretonhampstead on the edge of Dartmoor. We've stayed many times before and look forward to retuning again.
Location was good Beautful location in small village on Dartmoor. Hotel was charming - very old with standing stones built into the wall. Food was average.
Excellent location for exploring Dartmoor. Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Room spacious, shower hot hot.
