I don't really want to share my experience of Akureyri and the locals, as I want to keep this place to myself. I dont want lots of people to discover it's magic and it's culture. I want all the tourists to go south and stay away, because this place is amazing, and I dont want anyone else to know about it. From the coffee shop that became our favourite daily cuppa, to the whales in the fjord, the warmth and healing in forrest lagoon, and the drive to Husavik on deserted roads via Godfoss. Riding battery scooters at midnight through the streets in silence under Northern Lights. So, don't go there because it's my secret,, not yours.

We visited all the famous sites The Thermal baths was great. A big area (and currently expanding). The restaurant there was very reasonably priced for Iceland. They made a great coffee. Food was good. Went to the geothermal site which was pretty amazing. We hiked up Hverfjall, theextinct volcano which was interesting. Went to Dentifoss and Selfoss which were very impressive We enjoyed our stay. Well worth a visit

Hvitserkur ocean rock was a waste of time.

Hvitserkur ocean rock was a waste of time. The road to get there is bumpy and gravel. The viewing platform does not get you the close up picture you see online. The get the close up you have to climb down a cliff that is posted with danger signs (not meant for young children), and the tide has to be all the way out. Kolugljufur canyon is pretty. We would have enjoyed hiking the trails in that area but didn't have time.

We didn't have much time to spend here, however, just spending a couple of days at the hotel and walking around the area would be wonderful. It's a beautiful hotel and area to sit around and relax or soak in the hot tub admiring the amazing views. The museum and some restaurants were closed when I went in March. There is definitely more to do in the summer months.
