This is truly a 5-star experience out of 5. The room is spacious enough for a comfortable stay. Every detail—from the crisp, white towels and feather-soft, high-quality linens to the large shower (especially for Italy) with excellent water pressure and the comfortable beds—leaves no doubt about the quality of this hotel. In November, the heating ensured the room and bathroom were wonderfully warm and cozy. The private parking on the hotel premises is convenient and secure.

Hotel Sonia is a perfect option to stay in Trieste, budget and quality wise. The room was spacious and clean, the washroom was super clean, the beds were comfortable and the air conditioning was working. The hotel is a bit far from the city center, but there are two bus stops nearby and you can easily reach the city and the train station with buses. Highly recommended and will definitely be back in my next trip to Trieste

We booked a camping spot for our tent and we could choose the spot in the booked area ourselves! The spots were spacious with a lot of shade and the restrooms and showers were extremely clean! There is a little train that brings you down to the beach but you can also easily walk there. It's a nice walk down the cliffs through a forest.

There is no modern bakery or coffee house in the entire village. We felt that a bit of progress or a more modern atmosphere was missing—perhaps a case of resting on one’s laurels. However, we really enjoyed the nearby fish restaurant, where the staff was very welcoming.

Trieste is a charming seaport in northeast Italy.

Trieste is a charming seaport in northeast Italy. The Piazza Unita d'italia is very grand and opens right onto the sea. The Canal Grande is very pretty and is right in the middle of the town. Miramare Castle, a beautiful white 19th-century castle is perched high on the hill and is worth the climb. Trieste is also known for being a coffee hub. Try Caffe Tommaseo hich is the oldest cafe in the city. Trieste has always been a prosperous trading centre and emerged in the 20th century as an important hub for literature and music. Walk in the footsteps of James Joyce.

Trieste is everything Venice isn't.

Trieste is everything Venice isn't. Venice is two hours away by train and there you will be fleeced for every penny you have, struggle through crowds of hot and bother tourists and - despite the amazing architecture and history - feel ultimately let down. Trieste is a real city with a vibrant street culture and full of historical buildings from the various empires that have rule the area: Roman, Venetian and Austrian - there is so much to see. There are 'beaches' not really beaches, but swimming areas and they are not rented out like so many are in Italy. They can get very crowded at weekends - still they were very welcome during the hot weather. There is a short ferry trip to Muggia, which locals tell me is like Venice without the canals - I've yet to get there, because we spent our time exploring Trieste itself. I would definitely return.

We liked Muggia.

We liked Muggia. It is small and easy to navigate the old town. The main Piazza has several bars and cafes, friendly and welcoming for a drink or a meal, and fun for people watching. There are more cafes and bars towards the waterfront. Just stroll around and enjoy the relative tranquility. We arrived in Trieste by train, taxi to Muggia was around 35 euros. We took a day trip back to Trieste by ferry (fun in itself), and did lots of walking from Muggia. It's a nice respite from the tourist circuit, and so pretty with stone buildings and small alleyways, plus the castle (exterior) and Duomo to enjoy. Muggia Vecchio, up on the hill behind, was well worth the walk.
