Sapporo is one of the nicest cities in Japan, and one of the youngest. I am a foreign resident here and I can attest to this. It is unique in that it has a different feel to other cities in Japan (Hokkaido as a whole feels very different to the rest of Japan). There are notably less temples and shrines and a bit more of a European influence due to the western scholars who were brought in to construct the city and who also established Hokkaido University, one of the most famous in Japan being one of the Imperial universities. Sapporo City is very easy to get around, almost entirely flat and not too crowded. I recommend renting a bike from Eki-Chari cycles at the station. Sapporo also has quite a large young population (due to the university and the desire of many young Japanese to escape the hustle and bustle of Japan's heavily populated mainland cities) and this gives the city character especially for young adult travelers. It's clean, and a mix of modern and old, with a great food scene and lots of really neat, affordable and well managed guest houses and budget accommodation for travelers. personally, I could live here!
It is a bit rural compared to Sapporo but it din reduce the friendliness from the local. They r trying their very best to help us in everything and their seafood is quite affordable and very fresh compared to some other places in Hokkaido.
Sapporo is a beautiful place during winter though it can be really cold. Shopping comparing some of the exact items we saw in Sapporo and Tokyo, Sapporo is cheaper. There are many places to just explore and enjoy like the Hokkaido University that is beautiful! Otaru is another wonderful place to go for the day or if u have time, 2-3 days. Something different that you don’t usually find it elsewhere. Nice to go to the Sapporo Wholesale Market for some fresh seafood but it is probably overpriced since it is touristy. At least explore it once. 😁
Sapporo is a perfect place for winterwonderland especially in February for the Snow Festival (expect hotels to be fully booked though). Mt. Moiwa is a nice place to see the cityscape. And the city is a heaven for good food as well: Soup Curry, Seafood (in Nijo Market), Hokkaido ramen, etc. The food souvenirs in Hokkaido have endless variety too- I would recommend Shiroi Koibito and Royce.
Yet another big Japanese city with lots of modern buildings and a lack of personality. Take a car/train/bus and travel the rest of Hokkaido for some true wonders.
Sapporo is a great place to visit if you want to experience another part of Japan. We’ve been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other cities on the main island but Hokkaido was always on our bucket list. Aside from the Snow Festival, the highlight of our trip was the Sapporo Beer Factory at night. Beautiful site and spacious grounds with many buildings housing the original factory , eating facilities and shops. The museum was fascinating with many displays educating visitors about the history of the beer. We ate at one of the Mongolian style restaurants , ordering lamb and seafood grilled at our table. Another highlight was a 30 minutes train ride to Odori Canal, a coastal town with a rich history. If you like king crab this was the place to go. We selected a live crab at the Senkaku Seafood Market and had it cooked for us. So delicious. Sapporo’s Nijo Market was another treat. Fresh scallops, oysters and sea urchins grilled as you wait and eaten at the seafood vendor’s stand. Purchased dried scallops at decent price at this market. Many Daiso stores to purchase bargain items. Sapporo soft serve ice cream is so smooth and despite the cold weather, we enjoyed it several times during our stay.
Interesting history, especially in light of end of feudalism. Worhwhile to explore unique international background. Easy to get around by Public transport. Loved taking cablecar at night to view the city, enjoyed Botanical Gardens and Museum of People of Hokkaido and Hakodate.
Cheaper accommodations then sapporo. Convenient access to major rail lines, and the airport. Good base for Hokkaido exploration.
Nice wee town and introduction to Hokkaido. Loved high tea at the British Consulate. The museum of northern people’s was beautiful. The produce in Hokkaido is just incredible definitely visit the morning market!
Sapporo is the attractive city that every visitor should visit. Beautiful nuture, nice weather, good transportation, nice people and very fresh seafood as well as many cultural places. From Sapporo the visitors can easily travel by the JR to other cities in Hokkaido.
Akankohan
Best place in Hokkaido! Breakfast and Buffet Dinner included: great choices of Japanese, Chinese and Western food. Fresh food and high level choices. Lakeside view during meals. Great Onsen, friendly staff, shuttle to parking area fast and upon request. Big rooms, nice tatami styles, 5 people come for daily room cleaning at once and job is done so quickly, get as much drinking water as you need, afternoon can eat free Hokkaido potatoes, nice art exhibition area from woodwork, close to Ainu village, very friendly tour desk.
Shari
The house is close to station SHIRETOKO SHARI. It also has a parking place in front of the house, seems can park two cars. Next to the house, there was a French restaurant and Izakaya, a convenient place for dinner. And a Secomart which is the convenient store of Hokkaido located opposite of the house. The house has two twin-bed rooms, one Japanese styled room with Tatami, feels good for 5-6 people. I would appreciate the host, he shared us some information about the house and restaurant, made us a wonderful journey.
Noboribetsu
Perfect location - The onsen hotel is located opposite to the bus station and shops are just right at the corner. Good food - Many choices of nice food at buffet breakfast. The dinner is also delicious with seasonal Hokkaido food. Clean & comfortable room - Our traditional Japanese room is newly refurbished and spotlessly clean. Great services - Staff are friendly and helpful. Onsen - Big and comfortable with all amenities you need. Highly recommended. Would definitely stay here again.
I can say this was one of the best stay experience in my hokkaido. some of the highlights are- 1. Very spacious front desk, it feels like you are at a palace. 2. Very supportive staff at front desk 3. You will get free lounge access at your floor 4. Big and spacious rooms and same for bathroom. 5. Nice in-room amenities. 6. Beautiful view from room of river and mountain ( do book river view rooms) 7. Good breakfast options even for vegetarian
Hakodate
This was our first time visiting Hokkaido, wanted to experience traditional Japanese style accommodation, this place didn’t disappoint us , the whole facility is really nice and clean, it has being decorated very well by the owner. In addition, the owner is very kind and warm, we have talked a lot even we didn’t understand each very well, she had given us a small dedicated gift before we left. Hope we have chance come here again!
We really felt at home in the apartment. It is new, clean, spacious, well decorated, has comfortable beds and is equipped with everything one needs. It even has a washing machine and a balcony. Great location just a few minutes from the fish market and the shopping arcade. The host was very friendly and communicated with us by internet.Gave us tips what to do. We would definitely stay there again if we go back to Hokkaido.
I loved this hotel! The staff were incredibly helpful, I made a mistake and booked for just myself instead of two people, but they were very understanding and helped me solve the issue with no problems at all. I was very thankful for that! The room itself was very clean and pretty, we got the highest floor and the view was opposite Sapporo tower. I'd definitely stay here again when I go back to Hokkaido!
Shintoku
Even though I was the only guest, the host Nemoto-san took great care of me. He told me all about the local area, recommended some good events, and even shared a sampler of some amazing Japanese whiskies! We spent most of the night talking about various travels, and it was a great time. In the morning, I had a delightful breakfast of local Hokkaido produce and even a packed lunch of delicious breads!
This was my 3rd stay here during the 2021/2022 ski season at the start &or end of each trip so I’m happy with this property for 1 or 2 nights each time I’m in Hokkaido. The location is great for walking all around Sapporo and we never need to use subways or taxis during the stay. The rooms & bathrooms are huge for Japan, very clean and usually cheap compared to most Sapporo hotels.
Kiyosato
Quiet, rural location!! Really enjoyed our stay here, the hosts were very kind and helpful, happy to chat with us even though our Japanese is very limited. They picked up and dropped off at the station and restaurants in town (we recommend the ones they suggest - had the most delicious tempura prawns one night!!) Room was comfy too!! Would like to stay here again next time we’re in Hokkaido !!
Teshikaga
Traveler’s Inn Asanebo is a traditional Japanese-style Inn. Perfect location to explore Hokkaido lakes, experience outdoor onsens, and see the wildlife. Taka is an amazing host, the food (breakfast and dinner) were just delicious. Taka is also a photographer and showed us around the area. It was the best place we stayed in Hokkaido. Thank you for your hospitality, Taka!
Date
Real Hokkaido hospitality at its best. Would recommend to anyone looking to experience home life in Japan, especially if you like exploring and onsen hot springs - some of which are free. The host took amazingly good care of us and was happy to chat (Japanese). Natural hot spring water in the bath and geothermal heating is always good! Warm and cosy house.
Wakkanai
Nice big rooms, a proper hotel, big bathroom, a couple chairs, desk, good size tv, pretty comfortable beds. The staff saved me, a spoke on my bike broke and they found someone who could fix my bike that day, I’m cycling Hokkaido, bike is the most important thing... The food at the restaurant was good and reasonably priced.
Cool design hotel right in the center of town, accross the street from TV tower. Canvas changes from your traditional Japanese hotel: feels more international, more European. Hokkaido cuisine restaurant Kumuy, just downstairs is worth a visit. A very good place with local ingredients and what looks like French technique.
Noboribetsu
Friendly staff, tasty meal and not as salty as those in other places in Hokkaido. Meal is a little bit over priced but it’s in good quality. We had the crab and the beef dinner. Great onsen water with the signature sulfuric smell at Noboribetsu area. Close to the sights and hiking trail is literally across the road.
It’s just two blocks from the Nakajimakoen station. The room was very comfortable and well sized compared to several other hotels we have been in around Hokkaido that have more compact layouts. The shower and bathroom are spacious, with well-thought out accessories. There’s even a Nespresso machine in the room.
Very classic business hotel, not the best Japanese experience, but really comfortable after a 1-week road trip in Hokkaido. The room was clean and very nice, with nice lightnings. The location was perfect, next to the station and Odori park, in the heart of Sapporo. Lots of good restaurants around.
It was the best onsen hotel we have stayed during our 2 weeks trip in Hokkaido. Many onsen pool and wide bath area, free drinks (even has free wine) and popsicles on the first floor and very friendly staffs. We will definitely like for WBF in our future trips.
We stayed in a traditional Japanese room with comfortable tatami beds. The outdoors Onsen on Level 3 in the annex is very good. And would definitely recommend the food in the buffet - was the best hotel food we had on our Hokkaido trip.
Lovely rooftop onsen which we thoroughly enjoyed. Breakfast buffet which featured local produce of Hokkaido was plentiful and delicious. A great new hotel situated in a quiet street but still near enough to shopping and restaurants.
