"It isn’t a typical tourist destination from my understanding but the gardens by night are absolutely stunning. The casual is also beautiful and I’m sad to have missed the pottery class. Food and bars also exceptional - everybody is particularly friendly, and perhaps less used to accommodating tourists. Coffee: Empire coffee roasters. Friendly service and outstanding coffee. Food: Hidaya Yanigamachi. Grill your own delicious meat. Drink: ichigin. Super friendly and will involve you in conversations even if you don’t speak Japanese."

One of 1,055 reviews:
"We loved Kurashiki. The historical quarter is so pretty with the gorgeous canal and its boats, along with the streets of former rice storehouses. The old town is quick and easy to navigate and there is so much to do! We also loved exploring the shops and enjoyed a delicious meal of Bukkake udon, a local specialty. Would highly recommend a visit here. Note: The Momotaru “Peach Boy” Folk Museum was great for our 10 year old daughter and fun for us too!!"

"We stayed here rather than on Naoshima island and took the short ferry across to the island. When we planned our trip, I had not factored in that many of the museums on the island were closed on a Monday and that some had to be booked for the Sunday. The benefit is that the onsen next to the Uno hotel is wonderful. You can be outside in one of the outside baths and at night gaze at the stars. We had a massage and a Japanese meal in the onsen and ambled happily back to the hotel. We delayed our planned departure to go the next morning after we had checked out of the hotel. We did not really explore the town itself but had a lovely meal in a restaurant close to the ferry building, overlooking the park and shopped in the big stores near the station."

The staff were friendly and helpful and the location is great - about 10 minutes walk to the train station. There are lots of extra little details that make Dormy Inn special and great value for money. The onsen is excellent, high standard, and such a treat. There were little extra too, like free icecreams, which we were impressed by. And the laundry facilities were great, very clean, easy to use and very reasonably priced - you only pay for the drier.

It's a lovely place to visit, especially around cherry blossom season! We absolutely loved the cherry blossom viewing in and around the castle, and had a great time exploring the old castle town districts and shrines in the area. It's a very cute little town that really captured our hearts, and we highly recommend walking around the Tsuyama castle grounds if you happen to be there near cherry blossom season.

Okayama is a bigger city than I expected and I got lost trying to find my way out of the train station. There is a lot to see in Okayama itself, e.g. the magnificent Korakuen gardens, but it's also a handy place to stay for side trips, e.g. to Hiroshima and Miyajima Island, or Naoshima.

We visited Kurashiki on a Monday. We know that most Museums are closed on Mondays, but it was an unpleasant surprise that many shops, galleries and Indigo workshops were also closed :( most of the shops, cafes and restaurants in the Bikan that were open, closed around 1500. But, there are great local restaurants out of the Bikan :)

It’s a nice ryokan - close to the harbour and the train station. No staff - but it suits me well. Feels like my own apartment. Clean, simple but nice and cozy. They cleaned the room every day - I didn’t even expected this… if I ever come back to Tamano a m- and I hope I will because of the art islands around and the beautiful Onsen in Tamano - I will certainly try to stay in this ryokan again
