The Granvia is a comfortable and well run hotel located inside Kyoto Station. Kyoto Station is an architectural landmark and always a pleasure to see. It is also a transportation hub for busses, subways, and local train service, essential for visiting the far flung attractions of Kyoto. This was our fourth stay in this hotel. The hotel concierge service is exceptional, and I communicated frequently with my concierge contact, Saori, long before the start of the trip to arrange restaurants, and tourist visits. When she realized that we were interested in fusuma (Japanese sliding door painting), she located and identified a number of temples that were open only at very limited times, and that were not mentioned in any guidebooks.

Kyoto has a lot to do, temples, sightseeing, hikes, markets, areas of cultural signficance and of course good eating. The main struggle is just the heat in summer. We were battling 38 degree days with humidity every day in August during our stay. It is genuinely unpleasant to be outside and do sightseeing as you end up exhausted in the sun. I can imagine it is far better and more pleasant during the cooler months. Would take that into consideration when travelling to Japan.

Beautiful surroundings, not many tourists, cable cars to both sides of the water bridge were great, I went on a hike on one (although they want you to pay for the bus, it was a bit much, so I walked to the temple). I walked across the water bridge about 3 times, great walk, and a great solo trip even for women alone. I recommend it. I did also one day trip to boat villgae Inu - amazing. Recommend to go on the boat with locals.

Kameoka is the starting point of the famous and historical Hozu River rafting ride that takes you to Arashiyama, home of the famous bamboo forest. Enjoy the rafting, enjoy Arashiyama and take the train back to Kameoka. Hotel is a 5 minute walk from the station. A perfect day.

Local bus takes you to Ine to see the funaya , boat houses, great trip. Top views along the way. Take a boat ride.( Don’t go if you don’t like birds diving at you though, tourists hold out snacks to encourage them and you can’t see the funaya for all of their arms hanging over the rails) Walk up to the shrine while you are there. Beautiful. Old. Bring lunch as Boat Dock has great staff but no restaurant. Kasamatsu park cable car and lift are fun! GREAT VIEWS.

I especially recommend it to travelers from overseas.

I especially recommend it to travelers from overseas. If you are sightseeing in Kyoto, Nara, or Osaka for a few days, staying at this facility and using Kameoka as your base will be the best way to travel to Kansai. Like taking a day trip from your home. If your schedule is 2 nights and 3 days or 3 nights and 4 days, it is definitely a good deal even if you add transportation expenses. You can't stay in a house in Kyoto or Nara.

A lovely city, so different from Tokyo or Osaka, Great to just walk around in and explore on foot. I'll find hiden gems you would miss with public transportation. If you want piblic transportation the bus is the way as that stops closer to main attractions than the subway.

Miyazu which includes Amanohashidate, is one of three natural sites in Japan. The land bridge spans across the sea is fun to view from the observation points (on both sides) and you can actually bike (20 minutes) or walk (50 minutes) one way across. A small town with lots of charm and beauty.
