Nipponia Hotel Ozu developed an interesting strategy. VMG, the parent company, purchased, repaired, updated & renovated existing historic properties in Ozu, which is a small town in Ehime prefecture. Thus the lobby, rooms/villas, lounge & dining venues are scattered throughout the castle town section of Ozu. Our unit was the home of a silk merchant. VMG kept both the upstairs living area separate from the entry & bathroom. A nice touch was using Hinoki wood in the construction of the furo. There is wifi but no television or any unnecessary electronics, we missed none of it... The meals were both Kaiseki but the breakfast had a fusion feel to the dishes. We didn't use the lounge, but appreciated its presence. The surrounding areas involve narrow original streets & is very walkable. I constantly thought of Kurashiki but on a smaller more initimate scale. Close-by is a riverside walk that leads to a bridge over the Hijikawa river with an unobstructed view of Ozu castle. The morning we left I walked to the Ozu Shrine & marvelled in the Fall colors & fog in the valleys, Truly a photographic moment. I enjoyed the ambiance of the town, the effort by VMG to realistically retain the flavor of Meiji-Taisho life, while providing an income source to the local community.

A wonderful rest place close to the first temples on the 88 pilgrimage. Everything is super well thought out, modern and yet full of tradition. Hotel is close to the theme park as it is the only hotel associated with the theme park. BUT the hotel and theme park is quite far from the train station. There is a free bus shuttle but runs infrequently. We ended up taking taxis to the facility . The hotel is huge and it had lots of things that could accommodate the large crowd: Pool and game rooms for children, large onsen baths, large self serve restaurant, and a big store for shopping.

It combines the charm of a traditional ryokan with the amenities of a modern, more western style hotel. Excellent food and friendly, helpful staff, always ready to meet your needs. Add to that an outdoor, rooftop onsen and you have everything you need. Next door to the famous Dogo Onsen, a nice shopping arcade and bus and tram spots and its location can’t be beat.

Tokushima is a nice and vibrant city, that gets the most of its hype during the great Awa Odori Matsuri, held in mid August. If the temperatures are too hot for you, you can still see Awa Odori performances all year around. From Tokushima is also easy to reach Naruto, with its famous whirlpools.

A small town set in a valley surrounded by steep forested mountains and a majestic river Gateway to Iya Valley and other stunning sights. No shortage of top class food options and bars (particularly Casual Bar for great fun and karaoke and Cafe Addcolor). And the locals are some of the very nicest and generous people I have met. Can easily spend days just walking around the town and hidden laneways to shrines and spectacular scenery. I will definitely come back.

We were there for two days, which felt a bit short. The castle is a must-see, if only for the view from the top, of the city with mountains in the background. The Sunday Market is also a must, if you're there on the weekend. The small Science Museum near the castle was fun and very hands on, mainly for kids but also a nice detour for adults. We also found a Back to the Future DeLorean in the Automobile Museum, which was a nice surprise. Katsuo (bonito) is famous in Kochi, it's flame cooked a little on the outside but still raw on the inside and pretty tasty.
