The service from their staff were exceptional, I brought a melon and they helped me to cut up nicely for my family. The staff at Hotel Reus were very polite and helpful in general. Facilities, rooms were very clean and new. While the room maybe small, the beds were comfortable and we didn’t feel it was noisy even though the hotel was right beside the road. Breakfast maybe limited in variety but enough for a healthy meal. They have a pay as you use washer and dryer on the 2nd floor which was very useful. Overall a good value for money stop over hotel beside the road.

We have stayed here three times in the last six months - each time was different Our latest stay was for the Kotan - the Ice Festival. We met the lady who was responsible for the deign of the Ice Bar which was stunning agin this year. It's all very low-key - they only get about 1000 visitors to it each year. But THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF THIS PLACE! It's the only functioning hotel in the village and so you will have this place to yourself in a way that you will find hardly anywhere else in Hokkaido You really must take the dining package as there's nowhere else around - the visitor centre has a good cafe above it big with limited options. Otherwise there's nothing else for at least ten miles The reception staff are incredibly friendly and helpful - the most cheerful we came across in two years of living and travelling in Japan The food is more traditional and less Westerner-friendly than at similar places - but there are plenty of options at breakfast. Dinner is a set menu rather than a buffet - but all beautifully presented and fresh There are some remarkable tiled murals from the 1970a throughout the hotel The view from all the rooms over the lake is stunning - particularly in January when the lake is frozen solid and when there is a mist on the lake in autumn This is probably our favourite hotel in Hokkaido - not the most luxurious but just the whole combination is right. And excellent value for money considering the remote location

The apartment was in the woods it was very comfortable. There were wild squirrels near our cabin. We also enjoyed the breakfast very much, it was delicately prepared by the ladies in the kitchen. We experience much hospitality from these ladies. The ponies at the main area kept the children very much entertained. They also enjoyed the mini playground. The highlight of the stay was the onsen, just a 5 mins drive away which was also included in the price. We also signed up for the dinner which turned out to be the biggest spread we have ever seen in our lives. Thanks for the amazing time.

The location, the cleanliness and value for money far exceeded my expectations. Great use of space in the rooms. The most important was thew friendliness and accommodating nature of the staff. I only stayed one night but felt like an extended part of the family member when I left.

Onsen, breakfast and dinner excellent with amazing food and choice. For the onsen you can even privatize one if you are tattooed. The public ones are excellent with inside and outside baths. The rooms are large.

Despite there being many restaurants in the area it was difficult for me to find anything that was open at 6pm on a Sunday evening. Despite Google listing a whole bunch of restaurants as "open" I drove to numerous locations and they were all closed. I resulted in having to call ahead to restaurants and ended up going to a neighbouring town

Ashoro is a quiet town in central Hokkaido.

Ashoro is a quiet town in central Hokkaido. It is a long way from New Chitose or Sapporo. This town is a good stop if you're heading eastwards to Utoro or Shiretoko for hiking. If time permits, you can even use this as a place to explore different towns or have a chill holiday.
