I would highly recommend Palapas del Sol. It is about 10-15 mins walk to the main town, past other hotels and along the beach. The walk is very safe to do, in fact the whole island is very safe. I preferred being a little outside of the main town as the town is quite noisey with music and taxi carts. I found that all of the really nice hotels were out close to Palapas del Sol. The hotel itself is right on the beach and very clean. The staff are extremely helpful and you can WhatsApp them anything you want throughout your stay. You WhatsApp them every morning with your breakfast order and whether you would like it in the restaurant, at the beach bar, at the beach or at your room and they deliver it there. They were also very helpful with organising transfers to and from the island and tours. I had read some reviews that people have difficulty getting beach beds but I didn’t find this at all, they have lots of beds on the beach and also lots at the front of the hotel which is about 20metet walk from the sea. Highly recommended

The Location and Facilities were amazing. Staff is super friendly and helpful. We had the upstairs apartment that has two bedrooms, and it had the best views of Bacalar. We had our own huge balcony with a table that sits six with the best view. The restaurant just opened a couple of months ago; the food was delicious. The Shrimp Tacos are a must. Chef Cristian did an amazing job with the dishes. They have a nice double deck to enjoy your time at the lake. We will definitely come back.

This hotel is located in a central yet quiet area. Despite being fully booked, it maintained a calm atmosphere, and I didn't hear any noise from neighbors or the street. The cleanliness is impressive, and I found the room to be spacious with a very comfortable bed. It's just a 7-minute walk to the port and 5 minutes to the beach, with a fantastic restaurant right across the street. Everything you need is conveniently close by. I would recommend it 100%.

This hotel is a true eco-luxury boutique gem that perfectly reflects the unique spirit of Tulum. Intimately sized and beautifully designed, it is nestled between the jungle and the sea, blending seamlessly with nature while offering refined comfort and a deeply calming atmosphere. From the moment of arrival, the hotel’s positive energy and tranquil vibe make you feel completely at ease. The beach is pristine and stunning, ideal for long walks, while the jungle surroundings add a sense of privacy, harmony, and connection with nature. Watching the sunrise over the ocean is an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, ideal for disconnecting and fully relaxing. The rooms were exceptional—spacious, beautifully curated, and supremely comfortable, with natural materials, artisanal details, and high-quality finishes. Everything was immaculate and thoughtfully designed, creating a sense of intimacy, authenticity, and refined boutique luxury. Another wonderful aspect is the friendly, open atmosphere of Tulum South Beach. It’s incredibly easy to meet people here—whether during beach walks, at nearby cafés, or over sunset cocktails—which adds a warm and social dimension to the otherwise tranquil experience. The staff were warm, professional, and genuinely attentive, adding to the sense of personalized boutique hospitality. A special mention goes to the manager, Sonja, who was truly exceptional—kind, attentive, and highly professional, ensuring a seamless and welcoming experience throughout the stay. SANA TULUM is perfect for travelers seeking a boutique eco-luxury experience, combining jungle, beach, sustainability, tranquility, and understated elegance in one of Tulum’s most beautiful settings. Highly recommended—I would gladly return.

Everything! The place is beautiful. The room is nice and clean. The common areas are big and the view is stunning. You can see the sunset from the roof. Almost in front of the beach and close enough to walk to the center, but also peaceful at night. It's the perfect place to stay in Holbox. Also that part of the beach is quiet and clean.

Take official taxi or Uber.

Take official taxi or Uber. The others are robbers, ecpecially at the airport. Car rental services are beyond horrible in the high season. Read the ratings. Its insane, that services this bad can continue to do business. They ignored my reservation and tried to upsell me another car with 10x the price. We used taxi's (official taxi and Uber) instead. Maya's, Valladolid, Xcaret are all nice and worth a visit.

By far the best thing about Playa del Carmen is the close...

By far the best thing about Playa del Carmen is the close proximity to cenotes. They are amazing water filled caves that you can explore, but you'll always need to do so with a guide. Otherwise, Playa del Carmen is pretty whatever. Kinda fun if you're looking for touristy party bar vibes (like Hard Rock Cafe type stuff), but generally it feels like a tourist trap for the most part. There are soooo many scammers here and it's really hard to tell what is a legitimate official group or just another scammer. For example, the Tulum national park entrance is filled with people selling tickets and tours as if they are park employees, but they are not. They even have constructed a fake security gate entrance to make it appear you must buy tickets before entering the park area, and of course the tickets they sell are about 4x the actual price. The beaches could be nice if they weren't filled with garbage. This is likely because many street food vendors and restaurants serve styrofoam and plastic utensils that frequently end up on the beach and broken into tiny bits. So the beaches are actually quite ugly as a result. Tren Maya is pretty useless since they decided to construct it miles inland from the towns, so it just leaves you in the middle of the jungle. Overall, I mostly just felt like I was being ripped off every day I was in Playa de Carmen and the area around it. I'd only recommend visiting a cenote or two and leaving for some place nicer.

Tulum could be an easy place to avoid.

Tulum could be an easy place to avoid. The sea beaches are mostly inaccessible and are not at all worth visiting. There are few Cenotes around that are really good. Rather spend time in Cancun (for sea beach) and multiple Mayan Archeological sites in Yucatán.

The beach is great! It is a perfect place to relax.

The beach is great! It is a perfect place to relax. The town is small but there are enough activities to do in the sea. We were there in high season, I am sure when there is less people is even more relaxing. The little town has good places to eat, no need to stick to the hotel food. Arriving to Holbox it is easy but still almost 3 hours away from Cancun airport, nice to spend at least 3 nights in the island.

We believe Bacalar has been a bit overrated by visitors.

We believe Bacalar has been a bit overrated by visitors. It’s a nice local town, but tourist facilities are limited. Public access to the lagoon is restricted, and hotels, restaurants, and cafés are expensive considering the level of service provided. Cenotes and Los Rápidos are far from downtown, and some facilities are mandatory even if you don’t really need them, such as life jackets etc. Overall, Cancun and Tulum are much better equipped for tourists and offer better value for the money.

My FAVORITE cenotes were at Sac Actun and Ecopark Kantun Chi...

My FAVORITE cenotes were at Sac Actun and Ecopark Kantun Chi. Sac Actun requires a guide, but it's not as expensive as some of the other places. The cenote is beautiful and they provide you with wetsuits (which helps a LOT with the cold) and goggles. It was a very cool experience. Ecopark Kantun Chi has 5 cenotes but we bought the entrance that allows you to go 4 of them without a guide. For us, this was perfect because we could spend as much time as we wanted at each spot and they were all so different and beautiful. I loved #3, which was an open sky cenote with a waterfall and #4, which was a really cool cave with spots where the sunlight streamed in from above. We got to see some lobsters there too. Also a very cool feature is that there are kayaks in several of the cenotes so you get to explore them that way as well. Another cool spot was Languna Yal Ku where we got to snorkel in calm water and see so many different types of fish. I highly recommend wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs since sunscreen isn't permitted and you are directly exposed to the sun the whole time. For meals, we enjoyed traveling to both Akumal Pueblo (for some simple and cheaper meals) and Akumal Playa on the other side of the road for some more variety.
