Texel highlights

Lighthouse Texel

This 150-year-old lighthouse is definitely a highlight and offers beautiful views of Texel and the Wadden Sea from its top.

FAQs about hotels on Texel

A Haven for Wildlife

A Dutch island in the North Sea, Texel is best known for its wonderful sand dunes - a haven for birds. Common and grey seals also swim off its shores and some can be seen in the Ecomare rescue centre just outside De Koog.

Home to the largest concentration of Texel hotels, De Koog is a real seaside town and the centre of the nightlife, with a few bars and restaurants. At the island’s northern tip is its most recognisable landmark – the red lighthouse in De Cocksdorp. A ferry leaves from here to neighbouring Vlieland island in summer.

South is Texel Airport and its aviation museum, while inland are the polders typical of the Netherlands. Some are bulbfields that are a sea of colour in spring, while others are home to sweet-looking Texel sheep.

Oudeschild on the Waddenzee coast is a fishing village with a windmill by its harbour. Midway between here and Den Burg – the largest town – is Hoge Berg, an Ice Age clay mound. Next door is Texel Brewery, producing beers from the island’s wheat and barley.

Ferries to Texel from Den Helder arrive at t’Hoorntje and the closest village is Den Hoorn whose church spire can be seen for miles around. Wherever you choose to stay, Booking.com has a great range of accommodation in Texel.

Our stay at the camping was very pleasant, everything was absolutely flawless! The hosts were super kind, available and helpful. Our lodge and the whole facilities were immaculately clean and tidy. The location of the camping yard is excellent, in the south of Texel, very close to the port, with a bike rental place on the spot.

The town is quite small with everything being in close proximity to each other which is great! Plenty of different types of restaurants to cater for every taste. The Post Office is situated in a bike shop, if you need to send a card back home - speedy service our cards arrived within a week, brilliant. Two supermarkets are located at the edge of town, Lili, and Jumbo so very easy to use. Point to note, generally in Holland cash has virtually become redundant being a cashless society. So if you bring 100's with you be prepared to take them back, that't how life is becoming, sadly!

Texel is a wonderful destination for a bit of relaxation and exploration by bike. Den Burg is the biggest village on the island and has a lovely tavern, a few bars and nice shops to check. It is also ideal as a location, being close to the ferry and connected with all the other facilites on the island.

Great area with lots of things to see, it really does feel like you're in a calm oasis on an island when visiting here. The food around the island is amazing! Just a note: If you drive an electric vehicle, make sure to charge before coming onto the island. While there were charge points, they were quite busy, and those that weren't didn't take my payment pass, the only fast charger around was out of order.

Nice old village in Texel, with a lots of programs in the haven like shrimp fishing and seal spotting. Also some good restaurants, bike renting opportunities, walking on the seashore… great place to relax and be away from the everyday hamsterwheel. We ate lunch at one of the local ‘visboer’ super tasty fresh fish and had dinner at the ‘Pakhuus’ , which was quite fancy.

Wonderful little village surrounded by beautiful big skies and sheep fields. Very cozy and has a lot of character and charm. A good base of operations to see the rest of the island and get away from the crowds or bustle of larger places. Has some unique places to visit such as farms, breweries, and bird watching sites.

Beautiful village, it’s tiny but the perfect place to stay at while exploring Texel. Everything is a bike ride away and the bike paths on Texel are excellent and well connected. You can explore the whole island on bikes (even with kids). The sheep farm, Seal Sanctuary, and beach is 20-30 min away by bike. There is a great park at the corner of the village that we enjoyed.

Many opportunities for eating out and close to the beach and nature. Relatively far from the other cities but not as far as De Cocksdorp: Den Burg or De Waal would be a better option if you want to be in a more central area, but everything is relatively close so it does not matter too much.

Texel Island is an increasingly awkward mix of well-to-do summer homes, tourist accomodations, and very active agriculture. Den Burg is the island's traditional center and maintains its original character, despite some tourist restaurants and lodgings. Other places, not so much.

Of the four larger villages on Texel, Oudeschild is the quieter one and it has the additional benefit of the quite busy harbour where you can take seal watching or crab fishing tours, or simply enjoy the views of the large and small sail ships passing through. The maritime Kaap Skil museum is definitely worth a longer visit. The highlight is a very large interactive exhibition in the basement (that took more than 4 years to build) with detailed info about the role of the island in the golden age, the great Dutch ships and life on the island back in that day, including a massive VR installation and ship models of incredible detail. Outside the main building you walk through a 17th/18th century village with original workshops and living quarters, including a large windmill that is still operational today (you can buy locally milled flour there).
