Beautiful city that had practically everything we were looking for: a nice beach, Monte Brasil for hiking, the best architecture of all the Azores islands, and several day-trip possibilities elsewhere on Terceira.
It is the biggest city on Azores but still fairly small one, easy to move around and visit within one day. Given relatively small number of cars on the island (easily controlled) I did not like only paid parking places, even though easily available. Big number of restaurants, especially seafood ones, but the quality varies a lot. Relatively low prices for accommodation and food. Numerous companies offering whale watching tours at good quality. Surprisingly good roads, airport nearby with good organization and quite good network of connections, especially to other Azores islands, but also quite few international connections.
I almost don't even want to share how incredible this island is so that it remains as untouched as when I visited! We stayed for 4 days and enjoyed the gorgeous crater lake hikes, scenic views, sunsets over the Western town of Mosteiros, delicious seafood, and relaxing beaches. I only wish we had more time so we could visit more of the islands in the Azores chain!
The only beach only island of Terceira, in the Azores. The airport is close by. The views are amazing, the island is a reminder of Ireland, but with a warmer temperature.
It is one of the smallest islands of the Azores and does not have the dramatic landscape of the nearby São Jorge or Pico, however it was a pleasant surprise for the hiking, the Furna de Enxofre and the pools. Great for a couple of days
Love this place, in part because I have roots here, but also for the sense of peace that comes over you on arriving in the Azores. Plenty to do in the summer months, less so off-season, though it's still atmospheric. Landscape is indescribably beautiful, and sometimes you'll have tourist sites to yourself. Food is some of the best in Portugal (have the grilled tuna at Colegio 27, lapas/limpets anywhere, sharp seven-months aged São Jorge cheese, canned Santa Catarina tuna with herbs, cinnamon aguardente, passion fruit anything...).
Definitely renting a car for your stay is a great idea. It's easy to get around the island in less than a full day to locate the best view points and see where the towns, beaches, and attraction sites are. You can ask any local person where to find things and they are most accommodating even to the point of welcoming you in to try their wine and cookies. The highways are simple to follow and in good shape. Some of the smaller side roads can be a challenge as they are narrow and quite steep with cobblestones. Locals know where the best restaurants are and the food is great. It was great to shop our own food and cook on the BBQ at the house. It was fun sharing stories and experiences with locals and other tourists. We had a mix of sun and some rain as expected but the temperature doesn't vary much in the Azores, and the ocean is a comfortable temperature for swimming. Hiking trails are abundant along the coast and in the highlands.
Great scuba-diving even when the seas were a bit choppy! Really recommend Best Spot Azores diving! Loads to see and do - sightseeing the beautiful scenery of the island is a definite must!
We have been here for a few times now and we find that the small city is not so appealing anymore to us ,specially as it was raining during our short stay. We still enjoyed visiting the museums, walking the narrow historic streets and looking at the boats and cruise ship at the harbour. We enjoyed our dinner at Tasca but our meal at the Petisca was not so good, wish we had not trust the reviews as it was not how we expected it to be,should have guessed as there was only one other couple there!.... We much prefer staying out of town now, specially if you rent a car,san Miguel island is very beautiful as are all the other islands of Azores ,we got to visit San Miguel,Pico and Terceira and there are no words to describe the magnificent views and sites!
Lovely spot S Miguel Acores has a lots of beautiful spots, Lagoa das sete cidades, Furnas, Feitaria, Mosteiros Download SpotAzores and see if the sky is clear before going anywhere, for site seeing.

Paula and Joao are awesome people owning an awesome 200 years old house with a huge garden/yard. They explained to us the ins and outs of Sao Miguel the first night we arrived and were there to help by any means they could during our stay. The apartment is being cleaned everyday and the service is superb. The fireplace is amazing to have in the winter time when the temperature goes a bit lower than usual. If I ever go back to Azores (which is very likely), I would definitely look to reserve their place as my first choice.

Oh i loved this hotel ! For me it was better than 5 stars Hilton! :) Excellent place - view to the ocean, huge kitchen, calm yard, place to sit under the stars by the swimming-pool, new comfy bed, new shower, overall everything was new :) Very very friendly family who owns the hotel. On my European trip this hotel was on the top of the bests! Highly recommended! Will book it next time when will be visiting Azores :) P.S. absolutely clean, fresh and no sounds at night, even it is by the street.
Francisco was the best host we have ever had, & we had quite a few. He made it clear he enjoyed welcoming guests in person, & answering all questions via text, phone or in person to give us local knowledge. This was important since this was our 1st visit to the Azores. Incredible views from both inside this beautiful & comfortable home, and from the gorgeous gardens made our stay really special!!!

Patricia was both friendly and helpful - she embodied the traits of the perfect host: someone who meaningfully cares for their guests. She truly made our experience in Azores a blast. The house was very well maintained and clean. The rooms were large and well ventilated. The location was perfect - and easily accessible. Patricia's hostel is probably one of the top hostels that I have stayed in.

Comercial Azores was super clean, comfy, well located. Our only drawback was that although the room was always beautifully cleaned, we only had a roof window...no other window, so it was very stuffy. I think that is the only room of its type; the others seemed to have real windows. Other than that one room, it is a grest place to stay-very nice staff who could not have been more helpful!!!

The bed was very comfortable, the size of the apartment and of the rooms is very spacious. It can easily fit 6 people without feeling cramped. The shower is the best!!! It is rare in the azores that the shower is so nice and strong! The owner was very quick to communicate and to reply to any requests :) Paulo, thank you for everything!

The villa was very comfortable. The staff was incredibly helpful. They offered good advice about restaurants and activities. They assisted us in getting transportation around town and to the airport. This is a family run business that cares greatly about its guests. One of our best experiences on the Azores.
Thank you for letting us stay at your property. The apartment was lovely and the location was amazing. Leticia gave us excellent tips on where to visits and what to eat on the island. It was just a short walk to cafes, restaurants and maria. We had an amazing time on our first stop in the Azores.

One of the best hosts I ever had. Sandra and Fred are friendly couple with two beautiful children. Breakfast was amazing natural Azores kind of. Every morning Fred writes us on paper his advices for day based on forecast and his own experience. Recommendation for everyone!

The best stay (by far) during my 10 day trip in Azores. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming, group dinners (and amazing breakfast) out on the garden are a must. Good way to meet people. Location is great and the atmosphere is very cool. Would definitely return!

Teresa is a wonderful host who speaks multiple languages and maintains her historic family home with great care. She was a highly attentive host and the breakfast was an amazing introduction to the cheeses, breads, fruits, and pastries of the Azores. Highly recommended.

The stay at Quinta das Rosas was amazing. The property is centrally located, a beautiful and surprising hideout behind an unassuming city wall. The host Eduardo did everything to make us feel at home and recommend us places to visit. The Azores are a gem.

The restaurant has a superb menu and everything we ordered was perfectly prepared. Our room was in good order and the beds were as comfortable as any we experienced during our stay in the Azores.

You couldn’t ask for a more gracious and accommodating host than Margarida, she was absolutely wonderful and the best welcome to the Azores we could have had. Obrigada!

We loved the Azores and the fact that it was a small resort.

We have booked the triple room and I can say it is really spacious. Breakfast is average, not so many options for vegetarian. There are however fresh fruits everyday. I always look forward to their Azorean pineapples. Staff are very accommodating and are always helpful. We wanted pizza and they helped us order to our special needs. Facilities are also great. There are indoor and outdoor pools - even a jacuzzi. Location is also very convenient. Majority of the restaurants are 10mins away and there is also a 7 minute walk from a shopping centre where you can buy your water.

The breakfast was huge and all so good!!!! The room was very room with a beautiful view of the center garden. The room's air conditioner was already on when we got in the room. The staff at the front desk was so sweet and helpful. And a huge thank you to Marco in the hotel's salon. He made me and my daughter beautiful for my wedding!! I wish we had more time to enjoy the pool because it was beautiful!
