Beautiful city that had practically everything we were looking for: a nice beach, Monte Brasil for hiking, the best architecture of all the Azores islands, and several day-trip possibilities elsewhere on Terceira.
It is the biggest city on Azores but still fairly small one, easy to move around and visit within one day. Given relatively small number of cars on the island (easily controlled) I did not like only paid parking places, even though easily available. Big number of restaurants, especially seafood ones, but the quality varies a lot. Relatively low prices for accommodation and food. Numerous companies offering whale watching tours at good quality. Surprisingly good roads, airport nearby with good organization and quite good network of connections, especially to other Azores islands, but also quite few international connections.
I almost don't even want to share how incredible this island is so that it remains as untouched as when I visited! We stayed for 4 days and enjoyed the gorgeous crater lake hikes, scenic views, sunsets over the Western town of Mosteiros, delicious seafood, and relaxing beaches. I only wish we had more time so we could visit more of the islands in the Azores chain!
The only beach only island of Terceira, in the Azores. The airport is close by. The views are amazing, the island is a reminder of Ireland, but with a warmer temperature.
It is one of the smallest islands of the Azores and does not have the dramatic landscape of the nearby São Jorge or Pico, however it was a pleasant surprise for the hiking, the Furna de Enxofre and the pools. Great for a couple of days
Love this place, in part because I have roots here, but also for the sense of peace that comes over you on arriving in the Azores. Plenty to do in the summer months, less so off-season, though it's still atmospheric. Landscape is indescribably beautiful, and sometimes you'll have tourist sites to yourself. Food is some of the best in Portugal (have the grilled tuna at Colegio 27, lapas/limpets anywhere, sharp seven-months aged São Jorge cheese, canned Santa Catarina tuna with herbs, cinnamon aguardente, passion fruit anything...).
Definitely renting a car for your stay is a great idea. It's easy to get around the island in less than a full day to locate the best view points and see where the towns, beaches, and attraction sites are. You can ask any local person where to find things and they are most accommodating even to the point of welcoming you in to try their wine and cookies. The highways are simple to follow and in good shape. Some of the smaller side roads can be a challenge as they are narrow and quite steep with cobblestones. Locals know where the best restaurants are and the food is great. It was great to shop our own food and cook on the BBQ at the house. It was fun sharing stories and experiences with locals and other tourists. We had a mix of sun and some rain as expected but the temperature doesn't vary much in the Azores, and the ocean is a comfortable temperature for swimming. Hiking trails are abundant along the coast and in the highlands.
Great scuba-diving even when the seas were a bit choppy! Really recommend Best Spot Azores diving! Loads to see and do - sightseeing the beautiful scenery of the island is a definite must!
We have been here for a few times now and we find that the small city is not so appealing anymore to us ,specially as it was raining during our short stay. We still enjoyed visiting the museums, walking the narrow historic streets and looking at the boats and cruise ship at the harbour. We enjoyed our dinner at Tasca but our meal at the Petisca was not so good, wish we had not trust the reviews as it was not how we expected it to be,should have guessed as there was only one other couple there!.... We much prefer staying out of town now, specially if you rent a car,san Miguel island is very beautiful as are all the other islands of Azores ,we got to visit San Miguel,Pico and Terceira and there are no words to describe the magnificent views and sites!
Lovely spot S Miguel Acores has a lots of beautiful spots, Lagoa das sete cidades, Furnas, Feitaria, Mosteiros Download SpotAzores and see if the sky is clear before going anywhere, for site seeing.
Ponta Delgada
In the light of Covid the hotel does a fantastic job - delicious breakfast in a basket in the morning, contact mostly via WhatsApp leveraging a fast hotel WLAN. Very nice - and stylishly renovated - rooms in an old building with high ceilings and comfortable ambiance. Need to point out the great service we experienced . The hotel is located nicely close to down town. We highly enjoyed our stay and recommended our friends as the interest in visiting the Azores is picking up. We would definitely choose this hotel again.
Vila Franca do Campo
Apartment of comfortable size in a a new building complex. furniture is brand new and complete. Lots of towels provided, also a set of nespresso-capsules included. Everything you need is there. a supermercado with long opening hours is 50m away. Parking in front of the house is no problem. the neighborhood is very quiet (probably applicable for all of the Azores). Within 3 minutes you are on the main road to the eastern and western part of the island. center of the city is in walkable distance of 5-10 minutes.
Ponta Delgada
I’ve stayed in 100+ hostels all over the world and rarely give a 10 rating but my experience here at Passal was excellent, mostly because of the owner/host Paulo and his wife. His helpfulness, caring for the guests, and knowledge of the Azores provides you with a wonderful holiday experience. The hostel itself is clean modern spacious quiet and only a 10 min walk to the city center. Wifi hot water general security and simple breakfast all good. Highly recommend. Obrigado Paulo!
This was our fifth and last accommodation during our honeymoon in the Azores and the one we stayed at the longest. The hotel is ideally located in Ribeira Grande, not far from any of S. Miguel's landmarks. It is modern, very well maintained and the staff is friendly and helpful. We appreciated the honeymoon surprise left in our room very much! Extremely good value for money during the off-season when we stayed and highly recommended to anyone staying in the area!
Angra do Heroísmo
Alberto is a very caring, welcoming and attentive owner. We stayed in a family two bedroom bungalow. It was very comfortable and clean and if needed there is a small kitchen with everything you need. The bungalow has a balcony and a terrace. Excellent well-groomed hotel territory, amazing ocean views. This was our first hotel on a three week trip to the Azores. And we just fell in love with Terceira Island. We'd like to come back. Thank you Alberto!
Angra do Heroísmo
This Hostel is just perfect, it should be considered as a 4 stars hotel because of its installations and service. It is extremely clean, modern and beautiful. The owners helped us with absolutely EVERYTHING we needed and made our stay just perfect! Everything has high quality, breakfast is delicious with all fresh products from Azores: fresh bread, cheese, juice,.. I would recommend it a million of times. Great experience at Memoria Boutique Hostel!
Lajido
Host, Cláudio, a native of Pico, is great. Met us at airport, took lots of time to give pointers about Pico while we waited on line to get our rental car. English is excellent. Fun to talk with about all things Pico and Azores. The apartment was very well supplied with lots of towels, a good selection of high quality cookware, dishes and cutlery. We cook and found this to be in the top 10% of kitchens we've encountered in travel rentals.
It was an older hotel off the center of town but a short walking distance to the plaza. Close to everything. Not too much noise from the traffic. It had that was needed for the short stay but nothing spectacular. The staff was friendly and help when we asked for assistance. The breakfast filled us up for half the day. Wished the weather had cooperated but that is part of being in the Azores.
Ribeira Grande
Apartment is truly amazing, really close to sea, in apartment is everything you need, fully equipment, owner is nice and he left us beautiful gift with local products. Great terrace with look on the sea. Check in and check out was without problem. Overall we were really positive impressed and when we will come back to Azores we will for sure choose again this apartment with no doubts.
Ponta Delgada
What a fabulous little establishment. We traveled in the Azores and Portugal for 14 nights and this hotel was our absolute favorite. The thought and detail in conserving the history of the home was impeccable, the staff was lovely, spoke great English, helpful, I could go on and on. We would recommend staying at Casa das Palmeiras to anyone hoping for a lovely trip to Ponta Delgada.
Ponta Delgada
The apartment was very nice, lot of space. Communication with Sara was easy, every important information we got. Location is great, near to everything (with car). Property has also reserved parking space, which is amazing. Also watching machine, dishwasher and whole kitchen. Really nice place to stay if you want to try an independent Azores life for a while. We loved it!
Angra do Heroísmo
Definitely our favourite hostel of our trip to the Azores! This hostel has the best view on the ocean and the city of Angra and it really provides everything a traveler needs. André (the owner) has travelled a lot and it shows in all the details in the house. He is very welcoming and shared local drinks with us on the terrace. We would recommend staying here for sure!
Ponta Delgada
Casa da Ilha is a fantastic modern hotel experience. The staff here was amazing and really made sure I was enjoying my stay and comfortable. They also make custom maps for each and every visitor to highlight things to do on the island and I don’t know what I would have done without their guidance. I will definitely stay here again when I return to the Azores.
Ribeira Grande
The host was very kind to us, he greeted us with a basket of local fruit, milk etc. really nice touch after the long flight to Azores. On the departure evening the host offered nice light liqueur and bisquits, following Portugal tradition. We also offered us some stories about the Azorean way of life, which allowed us to better understand the local culture.
Porto Formoso
Very nice apartment close to the grocery shop and restaurant with the best fish soup on the island. Apartment was nice and clean, enough space for 2 persons. Be aware that there isn't oven but I guess it's standard in Azores because we didn't have any oven in all our accommodations in Azores. The owner was friendly and helpful. I recommend
Lagoa
I was very satisfied with this apartment. Very clean,a beautiful sea view. It has everything you need if you want to cook. Very cozy and comfortable. The owners were very friendly and helpful, always asking if everything was ok. I truly recommend this place, it's the best I've had on my trips to Azores. They did an amazing job!!
Loved the pool, loved the view and the surroundings. Location is perfect and very calm. Loved hearing the birds all day, the calm and the luminosity of the apartment. Everything was perfectly clean and even better than expected. The owner was very reactive. Would definitely come back if I ever had to come back to Azores!!
Ponta Delgada
The room was warm enough – that's a thing you can't stress enough, if you're traveling in Azores in March. The hotel was very clean and the kitchen was decently equipped. Our double bed was very comfortable, extra points for that! Overall we had a very good experience with very low price.
Hotel is Moinhos is absolutely charming and the most authentic Azores experience one could ever hope for. Laticia and Rodrigo are extremely hardworking and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay. My wife and I visited for our honeymoon and will be back - we loved everything.
One of our more upmarket Azores hotels – supper in particular good and with a fine wine selection, expensive but tasty choices (though bizarrely we were offered the economic menu of the day before being allowed to look at a-la-carte) …… excellent mid-city location in Horta. Recommended.
