Directions. Sat nav does not go to the right place. It's down a private road.

Staying in a real Scottish castle is a wonderful and unique experience. It's far removed from a hotel chain and is quirky and individual. We loved it! The owner was very helpful and welcoming, and we would happily go back.

The friendly host, interesting tour of the castle, lots of parking. A piece of history and a labour of love by Robert who is so proud of the castle.

Hallgreen castle would not be for everyone, but if you are prepared to accept that it is a piece of Scottish heritage and not a pristine boutique hotel then you are sure to enjoy it. Shame we didn't have time for the tour of the castle that Robbie offered us.

It is not every day that you stay in a 14th century castle! Robbie was the perfect host. The Scottish breakfast was beautifully cooked and presented :) The room was spotless and had everything we needed, including a welcome fridge with water and milk.

Personally nothing we disliked. The castle is a working home and Robbie & Vivienne are both lovely, well informed & happy to give travel tips! Bonzo & Rocky were also happy to play ball and have ear scratches!

The history of the castle was there to see. Robbie gave us a superb tour and free reign to look around ourselves for pictures etc. he also lit the fire in the great hall one of our evenings with only the fire & candlelight it was atmospheric and very relaxing ( no ghost came out though!)

Sat nav will take you to the top of a private road, it's not immediately apparent you are in the correct place - keep going castle is at the bottom of hill.

Unique property with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable host willing to share it's history. Embrace this building and all its quirks for a memorable stay and a great night's sleep. If offered a tour - take it, thank you Robbie for sharing your wonderful home.

The restoration of Hallgreen Castle is Robbie's work of love, so it is quirky and to his taste. This isn't a negative at all. It is just something to be aware of in case you think you are getting a five-star hotel. I prefer this type of stopover - homey, original, and filled with personal care and service. Thank you for a lovely stay, Robbie!

Great location! Easy to get to Dunnotar Castle. Hearing about the history of Hallgreen Castle was amazing. Robbie has put a lot of love into restoring the castle: his personal tour was excellent! He was super knowledgeable about the area and a great source of information. His full Scottish breakfast was delicious!! Parking was easy. I walked down to the coast of the North Sea through the backyard path. Lovely! There is just the one room for let, so Robbie gives you his full attention. I loved it and would stay again.

It was not easy to find. The address in Booking.com needs expanding with: at the end of King David Road, Inverbervie. While the exterior of the front of the castle is almost magical, the somewhat labyrinthine access to the room is less attractive. But that is part of the adventure.

This is not a modern convenient hotel but it is an adventure, an overnight experience. The castle was derelict when the hosts took it on and they have done a remarkable job, but it is still work in progress, not surprising when large parts of the structure date back to 1370. Our room was charming with a sturdy four poster bed. Internet was fine. The grand tour through the house by Robbie is a must, particularly the great hall is fascinating. The breakfast was very complete.

Call a nearby restaurant and book your dinner well in advance!! Ordering Dinner was not really possible in the castle. The local restaurants may close their kitchen earlier than advertised. We ended up in the castle living room, eating pizza and sandwiches from the local coop.

While booking this real medieval place, I was slightly worried about appearing with dusty cloths from a long day of hiking. Well, don't worry. Expect to be heartly welcomed like a proud knight, and you will be amazed by the experience. A little dust here and there belongs to the trade! The owner is very friendly, practical thinking and sooo enthusiastic about his castle. He gave us a tour with loads facts about architecture and history of his castle and scottish castles in general. Also he recommended a nearby cliff walk, where we found a colony with thousends of birds. Our bedroom with toilet and shower was well equipped and beautifully furnished. The 3 foot thick walls provided safety for the best sleep during our holidays. (Also, there was fast free Wifi) A tasty cooked breakfast was served in the equally beautifully decorated living room.

There's really not much I would change if the world was perfect. Perhaps someone who doesn't like dogs so much should be aware that sometimes, the owner's dogs would bark as we walked around the upper floors of the castle. It seldom happened, and the dogs didn't leave the owner's area of the castle, so we only interacted with the dogs because we are dog people, but if the (very occasional) bark shakes you to your very core, this mightn't be the place for you. Aside from that? Nothing to say - we had a fantastic trip.

It was wonderful - the castle itself was stunning, and felt both grand and homey at the same time. Our room was cosy and warm, and we were taken on a tour of the rest of the castle by Robert, who was a fantastic host. He's clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about castles and the tour may have been my favourite part. He was very accommodating too - allowed us to bring our dog and even though I only mentioned my fiancee was vegetarian the night we arrived, by the next morning, he had a selection of fake meats to make her a full scottish breakfast so she didn't miss out. Honestly a wonderful stay, and well worth the visit!

There are limited plug in options for charging electronics and nothing by the beds. But its a 14th century castle! Going to be challenging to have convenient electric outlet options.

Lovely unique castle perched on a cliff overlooking the North Sea. Breakfast was lovely- proprietor gave us a wonderful castle tour with fascinating historical facts and stories.

I can't say that there was anything we didn't like. It was a comfortable and relaxed stay in a quirky castle which was fun to learn more about on a guided tour. The local pubs were friendly and the place was easy to find using Google maps. I can't imagine how you might get there on public transport though.

A good sea view from the dining room and it was great being able to sit by the fire in the Great Hall on one of the evenings. The hosts thoughfulness for our dog was great - he even made sausages for the dogs breakfast. It was fun having a four poster bed in our room.
