How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Although mostly clean, the cleanliness was let down by a number of things: Old stains on the sheets (and spare sheets), grubby TV remote and shower head. The bins outside were full and didn't seem to have been emptied for quite a while. It was not clear how to handle recycling. There were two bedside lamps with a spare bulb provided - however we couldn't get any to work. The blinds in the bedroom were inadequate as there was a street lamp outside so there was too much light in the bedroom - if you tend to wake up with daylight you will be waking up very early here.
Excellent location and well equiped.

Shower was very small and if you are tall you would struggle to get in it. The boiler was noisy. One of the dining chairs leg was broken. Bedroom needs blackout curtains as the verticle blind does not stop the light coming in all night
Lovely little cottage. Everything clean and tidy.ideal for a short break or longer holiday. Would definitely stay again.

There was nothing to dislike and we were very happy with our stay. However, the following might be useful for other guests considering booking: if you are very tall then be aware that the shower, despite being a very good one, is under a sloping roof and headspace might be a bit tight for some. We booked this property because it had a parking space but knew that to acess this involved driving around a block and reversing down a long and narrow lane; it'd be tricky if you have a very large car. We were glad to have checked it out on google street view before arrival and also knew that, once parked, our car wouldn't need to be moved until we left. If you plan to be in and out in the car a lot, this might need thinking about!
The central location in Whitby was great - easy to walk everywhere. Having a parking space was a real bonus although getting the car into it required skill and patience! The property was very clean, cosy, well equipped and comfortable for the two of us for a few nights.

This little gem is amazing. There has been a great deal of thought put into this cottage. Usb ports in every room, hair dryer, hand wash, bin bags, washer/dryer, fridge freezer, microwave tv in lounge and bedroom although we couldn't get a good picture in bedroom. Everything you could wish for although it isn't really a cottage it is a ground floor flat. Parking for a small car (very handy) although you would struggle with a car bigger than a Captur. This place is in an ideal location. Loved our stay here!

The parking is a bit tricky but once you figure it out….it’s ideal!

The view from just about every window was shocking , had to keep every blind closed because either the view was horrendous or opening them would allow people in the street and the car park next door be able to see right into the kitchen which runs through the cottage. Also the was a large amount of water coming through and running down the living room wall in the corner behind the lamp on the window wall !
The cottage was beautiful , full of charm and very clean , parking zone at the front of the cottage needs numbering to make it clear parking is permitted there !

See above. The washer dryer was an added bonus!!
The cottage was lovely, however there appears to be some damp developing in the bedroom and also between the kitchen and living room. The glass shower wall needs to be a bit longer as the pressure forces water onto the bathroom floor and you can see mold developing .
