Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaNot a problem, just a heads up: check-in closes a little early, so if you catch an evening train in keep that in mind.
Lovely place- very clean, lots of personality. Beds were comfy and the place was quiet. The owner is really nice too. Pretty easy to walk to the Golden Temple from here.

United KingdomA friendly greeting and tour upon arrival by staff. A small hostel which could be described more as a capsule hotel. Far superior to traditional hostels. The location requires bus/subway to reach almost all of the tourist locations in Kyoto but if you are like me it allows the chance to explore a more residential area. The area is surrounded by lovely bakeries and cafes.

CanadaAs other reviewers mentioned, there was a 200 yen charge per night. This did not bother me that much given the place is really good value. The "capsule" was a little warm for me, especially once you closed its door. If you get warm easily in the middle of the night, maybe keep the door to the capsule partially open. I am a deeper sleeper so sounds were not an issue. Light sleepers should be careful because the sleeping areas are a large shared space (unless you reserve the rooms) and there is some noise (e.g. light snoring, shuffling in bed, wooden stairs, etc.).
Very clean and nice facilities (laundry, showers, snacks, large lounge room, enough bathrooms). Quite a lot of amenities that are accessible through longer stays. Meeting other travelers, although brief, was very fun and cool - the place definitely encourages some socializing as you will run into each other here and there. Good security, I was not worried about my luggage at all - would recommend keeping valuables with you in the capsule just in case. Definitely best staying here for more than 2 nights to maximize the experience (I only stayed one night unfortunately).

GermanyThe location is quite far from everything you might wanna do in Kyoto, but the bus-connection is perfect and just a five minute walk from the hostel.
Everything! You have a nice little cabin on your own, either closed with a curtain or with a 'wood door'. You have a little desk to use and everything is hyper-clean. The kitchen was perfect to cook and you could even toast your bread! Sometimes there were free snacks :) You can rent bikes for a reasable amount of money and there are lovely cafes, shrines and restaurants near by! Try the indian one, it is delicious! The houses around are all residental, so you have a lovely walking experience. Also it was very quite in the night!!

United KingdomEverything about this hostel is exceptional, every little detail is thought about to create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere! To name a few, I was given a fresh towel every day, there was a huge range of toiletries including skincare, and relaxing music is played all during the day in the dorm room. The manager Masa-san was so friendly and helpful throughout my stay. I was there for 4 weeks, but it completely flew by!

NetherlandsThe kitchen/common area could use an upgrade. The location is a bit far from everything so you have to walk a long time or take the bus (which is cheap and runs often).
Big bedbunks which almost feel like a private room inside a hosteldorm. With super comfy mattresses, pillows and sheets. Loved it! Lovely showers. Free use of the laundry machine ánd also super friendly and helpful staff.

IrelandThe nicest hostel that I have ever stayed in. Super nice owner. Cool design. Nice extra touches with bathroom facilities. Free laundry service if there a few days. Kitchen has extras such as option to buy noodles (although I didn’t see a kettle to make them) Cooking and microwave facilities. Super quiet and atmospheric. Parking at an extra fee of 500 a day, which is needed as Kyoto parking is expensive.

We loved our stay here at Hostel Sui. They have bikes that you can rent for not expensive during your stay. The owner is so accommodating and helped us so much with everything. He lent us 2 rain macs when it was raining and gave us good recommendations of restaurants and an onsen. He even lent us a sewing kit when one of our bags broke and needed to be repaired. The accommodation itself is fantastic. We travelled as a couple and we had our own private space with a curtain. The doors to the beds have an option to lock then during the day too when you're out and about. All the other guests were super quiet and super respectful when we were there. The place is also super clean, like spotless the whole time. Nice showers and there's an option of a shower after 11pm beside the kitchen on the terrace as to not disturb other guests. This place really has it all. Thank you so much Hostel Sui! We had an amazing time here 😊

Everything! Will definitely stay here again when I return to Kyoto :) -location was nice as it was peaceful and quiet. You can get everywhere you wish to by bus/subway within 30mins or so - towels changed daily - the area I was in was so spacious! Table with chair and mirror, big bed and shelf next to the bed for personal belongings - many shops and restaurants around, I highly recommend checking out Noodle Shop Rennosuke and Tengu for ramen and Katchan for best Tokayaki! - free washing machine when you stay longer than one night :) - free tea/coffee and snacks in the kitchen area - the owner is so lovely and helpful, I was able to check in early which was amazing - female only toilets/showers - umbrellas to use if it’s raining

New ZealandI mostly liked everything: very well equipped and comfortable. I had a triple bedroom and it was just great. The kitchen had everything needed for cooking. The bed was comfortable. Great to have the washing machine available for free too. We loved the location, close to the bus and also very nice walk among the little streets of kyoto - less touristy.

JapanIn the winter, the kitchen, apart from the space near the big heater, is a little bit cold.
Probably the best dormitory I have ever stayed at. The owner, Masa-san is an extremely friendly and helpful host. I love the design here (considering that Masa-san has received an award for designing before), which creates a cozy atmosphere and privacy that usually lacks in dormitory-type of accommodation. There are not that many bunks as I have thought, which is great because I can have space for myself. Toilet/bathroom for female is separated, with door locks. Free laundry for guests staying several nights. Location is a bit far away from tourist points, but a great neighbourhood for anyone who wants to explore the peaceful Japanese vibe of Kyoto. I also changed to the Superior Female Room later (due to availability at the time of booking) and I think the Standard Room is just as a good option since I like the wooden door of the bunk, though it can be a bit small. The Superior bunk uses curtain, allowing easier get-in, and can be suitable for anyone who wants to make use of the table and private space. I have thoroughly enjoyed my relaxing and comfortable stay here.

AustraliaSome challenges with showering as the tap needs to be held on to keep the water flowing, but I do understand it is a design feature to save water. The shower cubicles hold the warmth so not a big deal for the water to intermittently turn off but does make for a good story when trying to wash hair :) A small storage basket in the shower cubicle to keep clothing off the floor would be helpful.
Easy access to city busses. A very kind and thoughtful host has provided all the comforts of living away from home, making the travel experience very enjoyable. As it is a small hostel it is easy to meet new friends.

United StatesI ended up needing to be a lot closer to Kyoto station than this hostel was. Took about 30min bus ride to get there. So just make sure you have your itinerary in order in the case you have to use the station more so, like me!
Great spot! Comfortable bed, plenty of space for luggage and to move around / get ready in the mornings. Quiet throughout the night. Everyone was so nice! Definitely recommend :)

PhilippinesThe property was 30mins away from Kyoto station and is only accessible by the city bus. HOWEVER, this wasn't a deal breaker for me because the property itself is just about a 5minute walk away from the bus stop, and most Kyoto attractions are also accessible via the city bus so I wasn't too bothered by it. If you're pressed for time though, it might be a bit of an issue for you.
I'm so happy I booked this place. The host, Masa, is very accommodating. He gave a good run through of the place, and even recommended local restaurants to try out. He's very helpful and approachable. The bed: I was initially worried that the wood might be too thin but I was glad to be proven wrong. I slept on a lower bunk and didn't hear any of the movement from the upper bunk. Privacy: I booked a superior bunk which was facing the wall so it pretty much felt like I had my own room. The space was big enough for me to move around in and I can even open my luggage to take things in and out of. Cleanliness: VERY CLEAN! The bathroom (shower and toilet) was well kept. There's even a stock of sanitary pads in the toilet, and the shower was equipped with disposable razors, disposable shower caps, shampoo, conditioner, and even skincare (face wash, moisturizer, serums, emulsions, oil cleanser, micellar water, body lotion). Amenities: the lounge was such a cozy place to eat at with a stove and microwave for when you want to cook or reheat leftovers. The washing machine and dryer was also easy to use. The shower also had a hair dryer and curling iron. Had a really good experience staying here and if I ever find myself back in Kyoto, I will book here again for sure. What I saw in the photos here are definitely what I saw in person.
