The ceiling fan did not work. The fire alarm battery sound off the whole first night. and there were little cockroaches that kept crawling into our suitcase.

The staff was very helpful and responded promptly to issues. The Old Historic feel had a dusty charm.

Kitchen open and close hours need extention. One bath towel per person. No wash cloth or hand towel. We were told to use community hand towels (2) hanging in bathroom, which were changed once per shift. Curtain used as a door in female bathroom. No paper towels. Bugs were seen crawling in multiple areas. Some inside and outside windows remain open to indoor and outdoor listeners. Not much privacy. Keep your door locked at all times. Much road noise.

Cute old time hotel, in need of repairs, was comfortable. One of two showers in Ladies shared area, in need of repair for some time. No window screen's on our two window room. Male check in person fantastic and very helpful. Female Sweed was difficult and rude to work with. Overall, if you can avoid the work days of the one unfriendly employee, it was an ok and peaceful experience. We would stay again in a pinch.

As of March '23, one of the two women's showers was closed for maintenance.

This is a wonderful, old hostel with loads of atmosphere. Many types and ages of people come through. The owner was nice, the quiet atmosphere was respected, and we loved the central location. They brew coffee every morning, which was nice.

Homey feel. Liked the historic aspect/atmosphere. Had a view of the water, the location is downtown, and easy to walk around downtown. First time in a hostel, traveled with two teens, good experience for them.

Bugs spotted, more attention to cleaning needed. Extremely strict on the male/female divided areas, which makes it difficult for a couple travelling together, private rooms are available.

Needs some TLC and updating, windows were stuck open in the room I stayed and no air-conditioning and there were also no curtains. As refered in previous question, it had the basics. Also I would like some way of contacting someone after hours(for emergency) my last night my entry key access code stopped. I eventually got in but is was stuck outside for a long time late at night

There are some cockroaches. There isn't always hot water. The rooms facing the street are extremely loud - sleeping is impossible after traffic starts in the morning. Room couldn't be locked.

Nice and old-school atmosphere. Friendly staff. Kitchen is well equipped. There is free coffee/tea. Not a big place more like a spacious family house.

Most of the time there wasn’t really hot water in the shower. I saw some bugs in the bathroom. It’s noisy from the street next to the hostel. They lock the kitchen in the night and if you want to take something between 21.30-7am you can’t.

The staff is really great. It’s near to bus station. The bed was the biggest I ever had in a hostel.

Good location in Hilo, beautiful building with antique woodwork The guy who welcomed us was very nice and we were upgraded to a bigger room.
