Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. Excellent location, particularly if you’re keen to attend the sunrise service at the temple. Plenty of space in the room. Terrific meals; the food and the cheerful hospitality of the dining room & kitchen staff in particular are worth the splurge.

Situated in Matsumoto, 800 metres from Matsumoto Station, Mitsubikiya features rooms with air conditioning and free WiFi. Had to check in early which wasn't a problem. The two staff were great - they speak English quite well, and were very patient with our very poor Japanese. Dinner + Breakfast is really good (but you do need to let them know you would like to have dinner when you are making your booking).

Close to Togakushi Shrine, 宿屋白金家 yadoya-shiroganeya 1日1組限定2名から8名様まで 全館貸切り 伝統的建造物の旅籠宿 Traditional culture experience is set in Nagano and has a hot spring bath and garden. Our stay at Yadoya-Shiroganeya was nothing short of magical. Firstly, the house itself is beautiful and incredibly well kept. It's like stepping into a time machine but also with some modern conveniences. Secondly, Maki-San, the host, is wonderful. She's warm and welcoming and communicates very well in English. We had such a good time learning about the house, its history, and also about herself and how she runs the place. Thirdly, the food. I cannot stress enough how much of a culinary experience this is. The food served by Maki and her mother is exceptional. Locally-sourced and impeccably prepared, we had everything from fresh sashimi, seasonal vegetables, local beef, tempura, and soba noodles. It was honestly one of the best meals we had in Japan! The food alone makes price justifiable, never mind the rest of the experience. An absolute highlight of our trip, we'd love to stay with Maki again one day.

Featuring mountain views, Futari Shizuka provides accommodation with an open-air bath, a garden and a bar, around 26 km from Takato Joshi Park. We had an exceptional experience Futari Shizuka. The staff were very friendly and we had lovely Japanese ladies who personally showed us to our rooms and made tea for us, and offered local Japanese snacks. We had a lovely chat, albeit limited English from them. Dinner and breakfast were served in a private room, food and service were awesome! We had a birthday celebration and they prepared a lovely cake for us. We had such a wonderful stay that we are still reminiscing weeks after our trip.

Offering quiet street views, Residence Yasushi is an accommodation situated in Nozawa Onsen, 22 km from Ryuoo Ski Park and 33 km from Jigokudani Monkey Park. From the moment I stepped into Residence Yasushi, I was captivated. The cozy atmosphere and thoughtfully warm decorations, extending from the lobby to the dining area, immediately made me feel at home. The room was spacious, impeccably clean, and incredibly comfortable—perfect for unwinding. The private onsen was a wonderful bonus, adding a touch of luxury to the stay. The breakfast was delightful, and I appreciated the thoughtful gesture of allowing guests to use the dining area for takeaway dinners. What truly set this experience apart, however, were the people. A heartfelt thank-you to Keisuke and Aisha for their exceptional hospitality. They made my stay so memorable and special that I found myself wishing I could extend my visit. Residence Yasushi is truly a gem!

Takimi Onsen Inn that only accepts one group per day features a hot spring bath and free private parking, and is within 9.1 km of Otsumago and 9.3 km of Kotoku-ji Temple. Our one night at Takimi House was the highlight of our two-week trip to Japan. The hosts, a lovely couple, made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Their warmth and hospitality were truly exceptional. The food was another standout aspect of our stay. Every meal was delicious, but the miso soup was particularly incredible. It was the best we’ve ever had! Additionally, the hosts picked us up and dropped us back off at the train station in Nagiso which was incredibly helpful given the remote location of Takimi House. This extra touch made our stay even more convenient and enjoyable. Overall, Takimi House provided an unforgettable experience, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting Japan.

Set in Matsumoto, 7.9 km from The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, Izumiso features accommodation with a hot spring bath, a public bath and an open-air bath. Absolutely loved our stay at Izumiso! We opted for no dinner and the staff gave us a map of their recommendations around the area, all within walking distance. The onsen was beautiful and relaxing

Located in the heart of Nozawa Onsen, Tanuki offers guests a traditional accommodation with Japanese-style rooms that feature tatami (woven-straw) flooring. Really well designed. Small but very effective use of space. Offering an open-air bath and mountain view, Ryokan Warabino is set in Takayama, 12 km from Suzaka City Zoo and 24 km from Zenkoji Temple. We were really taken aback by how sumptuous the spread for both dinner and breakfast was. Loved that they used as much of the regional produce in their meals. The three private onsens were great - good and organized system and the space was kept very clean. Staff were really pleasant and great! They also provided complimentary access to the public next door which was a nice touch to the overall experience.
