Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.
Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.
Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.
Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.

Essaouira is a relaxed coastal city, quite historic and very beautiful. I love the medina because it has no cars and the shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants are very colourful. For people who eat fish, there is a huge choice, though there are plenty of other options, including for vegetarians. The clean beach is great for long walks. I've stayed in Essaouira for months at a time as it's very special.

It's a lovely, charming town.
It's a lovely, charming town.
The beach is wonderful and has great surf. However, there is far too much plastic waste which nobody is doing anything like enough about. Once upon a time this beach could have been a 9 or even a 10 - but there's no way you could give it more than 7 now.
The camel and horse people aren't too pushy so are not a problem - but there's quite a lot of camel poo (those small dark pebbles - are NOT pebbles)
When it's windy, it could be too windy for some people and that might affect your enjoyment.
I'm an enthusiastic beginner with surfing and had a great time getting up on pretty much every 3rd wave I tried. This is at the South end of the beach. I would definitely recommend for beginners like me. Pros my think the waves are too tame - but I guess it all depends on the time of year (we were there in Aug) The people who hire are really nice and it was cheap too!
The entire promenade is vibrant and fun in the evening as the sun goes down
The medina is lovely, lots of fairly wide (for Moroccan medina) lanes and not too crowded. Nice architecture and photogenic side lanes. The stuff there is nice and we didn't find people pushy or rude. There's a few really great places to eat too. Street food where you can get a fresh sardine sandwich - yum! And I had the best tagine I've ever had
Taxis in town are honest and don't overcharge - even when they don't have a meter (it costs about 10 d to get from one end to the other)
There are a few good places to watch music too - I don't mean generic rubbish western pop, I mean interesting african bands with strange instruments and unusual beats and harmonies that will make you want to move - so check out as many as you can
Oh and the castle is from Game Of Thrones when Denarys liberated the unsullied by cremating their owners - Drakariss !!!

Lovely little town. Easy to walk around. No stress or pressure from people.
Loads of good places to eat.
Not many serve alcohol.
Great medina, less hassle than Marrakech and tons better than Agadir.
CATS EVERYWHERE - so if you dont like cats or dont like to regularly share your dinner with them then please go somewhere else.

The town is pleasant and is suited to those interested in suqs and local architecture etc. Not sure about the food as we did not eat in the town but the local restaurants and cafes seemed busy. If driving from the town to marrakech for example, be VERY careful of the speed limits. The speed limits are planned to catch drivers.

August, temperature around 29, strong wind.
August, temperature around 29, strong wind. Perfect temperature, the Atlantic is frozen, I wasn't able to swim. The beach is immense, and on average well looked after compared to the other beaches seen in Morocco. There are deckchairs and umbrellas for those who want to relax under the sun. For lovers of surfing and kite surfing there is everything, waves, wind and lots of schools. Have fun

A great place for a first trip to Morocco.
A great place for a first trip to Morocco. Relaxed, safe, friendly and fun. Great for August as temperatures don't exceed 27º and it's cool (even chilly) at night.
Prices often European for eating out but things like bread, fruit, vegetables, taxis all really cheap.
Great for families.
Very friendly small hotel just inside the city walls. Great for exploring the back streets and close to restaurants and the beach. Also easy walk to Supratours bus station.
Rooms are small but comfortable. Shower was good - even on the top floor - and I had a view out over the street. Nice breakfast on the terrace or outside the room.
Colourful decoration and quirky characterful place. Friendly staff on 24/7. Fine for a couple of nights.
Amazing hotel, lovely spacious comfy rooms, great breakfast with lots of choice, good location for short walk to medina, overlooking beach so sunsets are wonderful, but looking out at the sea view as you wake is hard to leave, we have stayed here before and it is still one of the best hotels in essouira , but what makes it my first choice is the customer care, all the staff excel in making your stay perfect
Very nice hotel with great staff who were always very helpful. Our room had everything we might need for a short stay. Extra bonus was a gorgeous rooftop with views over the city.
Location is the best part of this place: the hotel is on a quiet street but close to everything in Medina. It is also close to one of the entrances to Medina, food market and bus station (only 10 minutes by foot).
Nice, clean and comfortable small hotel with lovely staff. Perfect location in the old town, walking distance to the beach and harbour. Spacious room with a view of the sea over the roof tops!
