Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. If I could give 100 stars to this ryokan, I would do it! It was absolutely stunning experience in Nagano, the whole family and staff are extremely friendly, kind and polite. They receive lots of international travelers and they understand tourists needs. You MUST book dinners and breakfasts with them! It was amazing experience! On a practical note: rooms were authentic, hot water, heater were reliable. Location is superb, close to the temple and delicious snacks. This place is ideal for alternative travelers interested in local tradition and with the appreciation for culture and history: I wish the owners only the best customers!

Everything was impeccable and the spaces are all very cozy. The private bath was a such a treat. We loved the views from the room and shared spaces as the house is next to the forest. Akira is an awesome host. Even though we stayed here during green (and rainy) season, he gave us lots of recommendations of things to do around the area. He speaks English fluently so communication was very easy. Can’t recommend enough!

Quiet neighbourhood near the temple. I would stay there again if I return to Nagano.

Snow Palace was amazing; my wife and I stayed there for around 5 days and we enjoyed the experience. The rooms were great and comfortable, the shared living room and dining room brought some nice cozy vibes and friendly interactions with other guests. The breakfast was simple but hit the spot. Especially if you're going to hop on the mountain; quick coffee, cereal and toast and then hit the slopes. I will say the standout experience was the staff, Gabby and her team are all so kind and have impeccable service skills. Will definitely return if I ever go back to Nozawa Onsen!
